It surprises some people to know that dizziness is commonly linked to migraine disease, either with or without headaches, says Debara L. Tucci, MD, an otologist, neurologist, and ear surgeon at Duke Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. Other symptoms of migraine-related vertigo include sensitivity to motion, light, and sound, adds Dr. Tucci. About 40 percent of people who have migraines experience dizziness or vertigo, according to VEDA.

When Do I Need To See A Doctor For Dizziness

It is usually best to have an explanation for dizziness. If you have a prolonged episode of dizziness, or recurring episodes of dizziness and are not sure what is causing them, then it is wise to contact a doctor. In particular, if you have other symptoms in addition to the dizziness, such as:

  • Headache, especially if it is severe, or a different kind of headache to ones you usually get.
  • Hearing or visual loss.
  • Any other symptom that you cannot explain.

If any of these symptoms have come on suddenly, contact a doctor immediately.

Women’s Heart Health

Detrow was having a heart attack that November day in 2009, but she didn’t know it.

For more on heart health, watch “A Barbara Walters Special: A Matter of Life and Death” tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET on ABC!

As it turns out, neither did the emergency room doctors at a nearby hospital. Upon seeing that she was an avid exerciser with no heart problems, they diagnosed a panic attack and sent her off with anti-anxiety pills and medication to lower her blood pressure, which had increased that day.

“Because I was somebody who did not have a history of heart disease, I believed them, because I didn’t know any different,” Detrow told “I was aware of the heart attack symptoms with the crushing chest pain where you clutch yourself and fall over: the classic male symptoms.”

Detrow, 58, is a poster girl for a campaign launched this week to raise women’s awareness that atypical symptoms, such as profound fatigue, unfamiliar dizziness, cold sweats and unexplained nausea or vomiting, can signal that part of their heart muscle is dying, and they could die, too.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. An American woman suffers a heart attack every minute. Yet after years of public education programs, the message hasn’t penetrated.

“My husband has been on blood pressure medications for umpteen years. When everyone heard about my heart attack, they asked ‘why you and not him?'”

Heart Attack And Stroke

At its most serious, lightheadedness may be a sign of a heart attack or stroke. Other symptoms of a heart attack often accompanying lightheadedness are chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, arm pain, back pain, or jaw pain. Symptoms suggesting a stroke are the sudden onset of headache, numbness, weakness, visual changes, trouble walking, or slurred speech. “But in older adults, lightheadedness may be the only symptom of a heart attack or a stroke, especially if it doesn’t go away,” says Dr. Grossman. In that case, every second counts, so get to an emergency room for treatment.

What Tests Are Done For Dizziness

Dizziness: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

A doctor is likely to examine you. Sometimes the doctor can tell you the cause of the dizziness from your symptoms and the result of the examination. In some cases, various tests may be organised to find the cause of the dizziness.

Your doctor will firstly need to ask you some questions about the dizziness. Is it constant or in attacks? Is it the world-is-spinning type of dizziness or a loss of balance, or do you feel faint or light-headed? Do you have other symptoms with it, such as being sick, hearing problems, a ringing in the ear , headaches, palpitations, etc? Does it come on in certain situations – for example, when you move your head from one side to the other? Are you taking any medicines?

The doctor will then need to examine you. What this involves will depend on the information gleaned from the answers above, but might include:

  • Taking your temperature.
  • Examining your eyes and their movements.
  • Checking your pulse and blood pressure.
  • Checking your balance and co-ordination.
  • Looking for any weakness in the muscles of your arms, legs or face.
  • Tests which look for dizziness in certain positions or position changes.

Depending on what has been established from the above, further tests might be relevant. These will differ depending on which diagnosis is suspected, but might include:

Wonder what happened then and how it came to be, but that thing of beauty was suddenly all dizzy. She stopped at the curb and retraced her steps back. To the sidewalk she came and dropped down onto the cobbled floor with the countless bags in one huge heap by her side. Everything turned black, then white and suddenly it was that she was fatigued beyond reason.

Heres the deal, in as many times as you have felt dizzy and tired beyond reason, there are of course reasons for why it has happened. And since youre here perusing through the said article you are either confused, worried or curious about the same and need some clarifications. How Is Dizziness Treated

Because it is a symptom, dizziness treatment depends on the underlying cause. This may include medications or balance exercises. If you are experiencing persistent or recurrent dizziness, its vital to see your doctor to get a diagnosis. Self-treating dizziness without seeing your doctor first may delay the diagnosis of a potentially serious medical condition.

Emergency Symptoms Are Good At Hiding

At first, dizziness may not seem like a big deal. Maybe you got up too fast or havent had enough water to drink. But occasionally, dizzy spells can indicate a serious problem with your healthsomething that means you need to get to the emergency room, fast.

So, how do you tell the difference between a little dizziness and a warning sign of a dangerous medical issue? First, you should know the basics.

Your Ears Balance System Controls Blood Flow

Weve learned that our inner-ear balance system contributes to the control of our blood flow,” says Whitman, “and that the inner ear has the ability to know which way is up.” When you move from lying down to standing up, two inner ear structures, the utricle and saccule, detect gravity. They tell your cardiovascular system to direct blood flow to accommodate your change in position, says Whitman. When that process goes awry, it may cause dizziness.

Chronic Dizziness And Lightheadedness

DIZZINESS, LIGHTHEADED & VERTIGO – Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue and Anxiety

Lightheadedness, also known as presyncope, is the feeling that you are about to pass out. Chronic dizziness and lightheadedness may be experienced together, especially if a dysautonomia or a dysrhythmia is also present. Lightheadedness can also be caused by orthostatic hypotension that occurs when you stand up too quickly.

Feeling woozy, lightheaded, or a little faint is a common complaint among older adults. Although it’s not usually caused by anything life-threatening, it could be, so you need to be careful.

“Don’t ignore it. Even if the lightheadedness does not have a serious cause, it could lead to serious injuries from a fall. And at the worst, the cause may itself be life-threatening,” says Dr. Shamai Grossman, an associate professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School.

If you feel lightheaded and/or woozy, Dr. Grossman recommends having a drink of water or orange juice and lying down. If symptoms last more than 15 minutes, he says it’s time to seek medical help in an urgent or emergency care setting. Even if symptoms are brief, and even if you think you know the cause, report the lightheadedness to your doctor.

Dizzy Spells May Be Caused By An Inner Ear Problem

One of the most surprising causes of dizziness is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, says Gregory Whitman, MD, an ear and brain specialist with the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Balance and Vestibular Center at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital in Massachusetts. Your inner ear contains calcium and protein-based sensing crystals called otoconia, says Dr. Whitman. If these crystals are dislodged and float into your inner ears canals, you may have a brief spinning sensation. Its a simple mechanical problem that can and should be corrected with physical therapy, and not with medication or surgery, says Whitman.

Though BPPV is the most common inner earrelated balance disorder, it affects only about 1 out of 1,000 people per year, according to the Vestibular Disorders Association . And while it can affect adults of any age, this type of vertigo primarily affects older adults. Most cases occur for no apparent reason, but BPPV has been linked to trauma, migraines, inner ear infections, diabetes, and osteoporosis. After treatment, 50 percent of patients may experience the problem again within five years especially if it was the result of trauma, say experts at VEDA.

Psychological Causes Of Fatigue

  • Depression this illness is characterised by severe and prolonged feelings of sadness, dejection and hopelessness. People who are depressed commonly experience chronic fatigue.
  • Anxiety and stress a person who is chronically anxious or stressed keeps their body in overdrive. The constant flooding of adrenaline exhausts the body, and fatigue sets in.

Doctor’s Notes On Dizziness

Dizziness is a very nonspecific symptom with a number of causes. Medically, dizziness can refer to vertigo, lightheadedness, feeling faint, or unsteadiness. Some of the multiple conditions that may cause lightheadedness include hypotension , hypertension , dehydration, endocrine disorders, heart conditions, and orthostatic hypotension.

Dizziness can be a temporary symptom that goes away on its own. It may be accompanied by a sense of spinning or that ones surroundings are spinning . Vertigo is often a result of disturbances in the inner ear or the balance-regulating areas of the brain. Lightheadedness can result from altered blood flow to the brain due to any cause. Depending on the cause, dizziness may have other associated symptoms like chest pain, sweating, weakness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, or fever.
