It is usually best to have an explanation for dizziness. If you have a prolonged episode of dizziness, or recurring episodes of dizziness and are not sure what is causing them, then it is wise to contact a doctor. In particular, if you have other symptoms in addition to the dizziness, such as:

Headache, especially if it is severe, or a different kind of headache to ones you usually get.
Hearing or visual loss.
Any other symptom that you cannot explain.

Detrow was having a heart attack that November day in 2009, but she didn’t know it.

As it turns out, neither did the emergency room doctors at a nearby hospital. Upon seeing that she was an avid exerciser with no heart problems, they diagnosed a panic attack and sent her off with anti-anxiety pills and medication to lower her blood pressure, which had increased that day.

“Because I was somebody who did not have a history of heart disease, I believed them, because I didn’t know any different,” Detrow told ABCNews.com. “I was aware of the heart attack symptoms with the crushing chest pain where you clutch yourself and fall over: the classic male symptoms.”

Detrow, 58, is a poster girl for a campaign launched this week to raise women’s awareness that atypical symptoms, such as profound fatigue, unfamiliar dizziness, cold sweats and unexplained nausea or vomiting, can signal that part of their heart muscle is dying, and they could die, too.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. An American woman suffers a heart attack every minute. Yet after years of public education programs, the message hasn’t penetrated.

“My husband has been on blood pressure medications for umpteen years. When everyone heard about my heart attack, they asked ‘why you and not him?'”

Heart Attack And Stroke

At its most serious, lightheadedness may be a sign of a heart attack or stroke. Other symptoms of a heart attack often accompanying lightheadedness are chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, arm pain, back pain, or jaw pain. Symptoms suggesting a stroke are the sudden onset of headache, numbness, weakness, visual changes, trouble walking, or slurred speech. “But in older adults, lightheadedness may be the only symptom of a heart attack or a stroke, especially if it doesn’t go away,” says Dr. Grossman. In that case, every second counts, so get to an emergency room for treatment.

A doctor is likely to examine you. Sometimes the doctor can tell you the cause of the dizziness from your symptoms and the result of the examination. In some cases, various tests may be organised to find the cause of the dizziness.

Your doctor will firstly need to ask you some questions about the dizziness. Is it constant or in attacks? Is it the world-is-spinning type of dizziness or a loss of balance, or do you feel faint or light-headed? Do you have other symptoms with it, such as being sick, hearing problems, a ringing in the ear , headaches, palpitations, etc? Does it come on in certain situations – for example, when you move your head from one side to the other? Are you taking any medicines?

The doctor will then need to examine you. What this involves will depend on the information gleaned from the answers above, but might include:

Looking for any weakness in the muscles of your arms, legs or face.

Depending on what has been established from the above, further tests might be relevant. These will differ depending on which diagnosis is suspected, but might include:

One of the most surprising causes of dizziness is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, says Gregory Whitman, MD, an ear and brain specialist with the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Balance and Vestibular Center at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital in Massachusetts.
