Joint Pain And Fatigue What Could Be The Possibilities

Fibromyalgia | A Whole Body Pain Experience and Fatigue

Fatigue is usually characterized by extreme tiredness that even rest and relaxation cannot cure. A number of factors are responsible for fatigue, including conditions that cause joint pain.

It is important to note that different people have different pain thresholds. However, constant pain brought on by sore or damaged joints cause fatigue in most people. The diseases responsible for fatigue as a result of joint pain include fibromyalgia, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Joints can swell or become inflamed while performing certain activities. It can also lead to a chronic condition. The physical and emotional energy required to relieve the joint pain and continue with everyday activities tends to contribute to the fatigue. Painful joints will also prevent a patient from getting a good nights rest. Without good sleep, fatigue will be a natural consequence.

Why Does My Body Ache Causes & Treatment

Body aches are an uncomfortable but common symptom of a variety of medical ailments. If youre experiencing body aches, your muscles may feel weak, sore, tired, or hard to move.

For most, body aches are easily treatablea few days of rest and hydration can provide relief from any discomfort. For some, body aches, particularly those that last a long time, can indicate a serious underlying medical condition that may require treatment.

Why Do I Experience Body Aches And Chills

The symptoms are inevitably a sign that something is going on inside your body. It definitely makes you wish you could stay in bed all day long. It can also make you wonder what is wrong. Here are some of the more common causes:

1. Viruses

Viruses are infections that take over the cells in the body. They can cause mild, moderate or severe illness.

Symptoms: Body aches, fever, chills, and severe fatigue. They can also cause weakness, coughing, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

What to Do: Simple viruses just need rest, fluids, and time to recover. Antibiotics do not help viruses. If you run an unusually high fever , have a severe cough, or cannot keep food or fluids down, you need medical evaluation.

2. Mononucleosis

This is a viral infection that causes swollen lymph nodes and overall body aches and chills. The illness lasts weeks to months, but the fatigue can be permanent.

Symptoms: Fever, chills, sore throat, abdominal pain, aches, profound fatigue, and enlarged spleen.

What to Do: If you have viral symptoms that do not clear up in 7 to 10 days, see your doctor. You may need tested for mono. Sudden sharp pain in your left side is a medical emergency, call 9-1-1 or get to your nearest emergency room. Mono is treated with rest and increased fluids.

3. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Symptoms: Daily fatigue that lasts for 6 months or longer. Viral like symptoms including: body aches, chills, low grade fevers, brain fog and trouble thinking.

4. Autoimmune Disease

Muscle Aches Extreme Fatigue: Coronavirus Symptoms Go Beyond Fever And Cough

Fever, cough, shortness of breath.

Those are the three symptoms prominently listed on the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions website under coronavirus symptoms.

But as case counts continue to rise in the United States and across the world, its clear that COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, causes a much wider range of symptoms. The more detailed descriptions of the illness that are emerging show how doctors and researchers are still learning about the disease, which was first reported just three months ago, in real time.

COVID-19 can begin in similar ways among patients, regardless of a persons age or health status.

Very often, extreme fatigue hits first.

Hedy Bauman, 74, was so weak she could barely make it home from a short walk to the store. Reading a few pages of the newspaper was exhausting.

My bathroom is maybe 15 steps from my bed, Bauman, of Silver Spring, Maryland, told NBC News. I wasnt sure I could get from the bathroom to my bed. She developed chills, but no fever.

Baumans doctor said her symptoms were consistent with what physicians are learning about other coronavirus cases, though they are still waiting for the results from Baumans COVID-19 test.

Brendan McLaughlin, 28, felt lightheaded and weak before the fever, chills and body aches began.

Id been healthy, McLaughlin said. I try to eat right. I take care of myself.

Is Pots More Common In Certain People

FIBROMYALGIA (FM)

There are no established risk factors for POTS. However, it is known to run in families, so it could have a genetic component. Researchers have also established a link between POTS and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome . So if you have one of these conditions, you might also have the other.

A big group of those diagnosed with POTS is young women and teens. However, this doesnt mean they are more likely to develop this condition.

How Are Fibromyalgia And Lupus Different

People with fibromyalgia often talk about fatigue and all-over muscle pain or soreness that becomes worse when they dont get enough sleep. Widespread body pain is the most common symptom. Their joints usually move normally and are not swollen. However, they do tend to have tender areas over muscles that are uncomfortable to the touch.2

People with lupus also feel tired and achy, but their joints are painful, swollen, and may not move normally due to cartilage damage caused by arthritis. They also get symptoms such as skin rashes that get worse in sunlight, kidney problems, headaches, or chest pain.

Are These Molecular Receptors Responsible For Sensory Muscle Fatigue And Muscle Pain

As part of a larger investigative group interested in muscle pain and sensations related to muscle fatigue, we recognized that these are greatly increased in people following exhausting exercise. Muscle pain and sensory muscle fatigue ameliorate quickly once exercise is ended, but increase again in untrained muscles 1224 hours later and can last 48 hours or longer before diminishing. The pain has been studied extensively and is often called delayed-onset muscle soreness , and most of us know that a sense of muscle fatigue is also increased during DOMS. The explanation for DOMS has been that exercise of untrained muscle causes micro-tears that result in inflammation however, this explanation is controversial . Whether or not micro trauma is involved, the sensory receptors encoding muscle pain and fatigue must be sensitized in order for these enhanced sensations to be apparent because the metabolite levels are not increased at rest in DOMS. As increases in ASIC3 have been shown in some models of long-term muscle pain , we hypothesized that one or more of the molecular receptors involved in metabolite signaling of muscle pain would reveal increased mRNA following exercise that produced DOMS.

Mouse DRG mRNA increases caused by exhausting exercise, measured 16 hours after a bout of exercise .

What Are The First Signs Of Fibromyalgia?

The size, feel, and look of your breasts are as individual as you are, and breasts often change predictably throughout the month. Some women normally have lumps others get a lump every month before their period. But something outside of your usual breast condition could be a symptom of a health problem, says Rachel Freedman, MD, MPH, a medical oncologist at the Susan F. Smith Center for Womens Cancers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Look for anything new that persists, such as a mass, skin change, or rash that doesnt go away in a day but sticks around, Dr. Freedman says. Breast cancer can appear as an unusual redness of the skin that looks like an infection, swelling, lumps, bumps, or nodules. Other potential symptoms include nipple discharge thats bloody , and breasts that become unusually asymmetrical.

What Causes Fibromyalgia Symptoms To Flare

Fibromyalgia symptoms can happen without warning. But certain events may trigger flare-ups, including:

  • Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. You may have more trouble sleeping, more widespread pain, or headaches just before your period when your hormone levels drop. Your periods may also be more painful.9
  • Stress.Chronic stress may raise your risk for getting fibromyalgia.7 Also, short-term stress, such as work stress, or stressful events, such as a death of a loved one, can trigger flare-ups in people who have fibromyalgia.
  • Changes in weather. Some women report pain with changes in barometric pressure or on hot, humid days.

Fibromyalgia As A Comorbid Disease To Other Primary Illnesses

There is increasing recognition that FM may occur in association with other chronic pain conditions, with most attention to date focussed towards the rheumatic diseases. Concomitant FM not only has impact on quality of life in the moment, but also adversely affects outcome, such as the success of total joint replacement in the setting of OA. Other pain conditions such as mechanical low back pain, visceral pain conditions, including chronic pelvic pain, chronic headaches, and temporomandibular joint pain may also be associated with a sensitization phenomenon, or spreading and amplification of the pain that is clinically recognized as FM. Failure to appreciate this broader spectrum of suffering will compromise clinical care.

Spinal Stenosis And Myelopathy

Although spinal stenosis is classically described as causing claudication symptoms especially when the stenosis affects the lumbar region, symptoms may be less clearly defined with some patients presenting with more vague and ill-defined body pain. This is especially true when the stenosis is located in the cervical region and symptoms may fluctuate over time and tend to move location similar to the pain complaint of FM. Causes of spinal stenosis may include degenerative disc disease, facet joint osteoarthritis, and congenital deformity of the spinal canal. Another cause of proliferative bony changes that can contribute to spinal stenosis is diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. However, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis as a unique diagnosis, although previously recognized as an incidental radiographic finding, can also be a cause of CWP in view of multiple locations of enthesopathy. Abnormality of the spinal canal can be identified by imaging studies such as MRI or computer tomography, whereas a simple radiograph of the thoracic spine can show bridging osteophytes across at least 3 vertebral spaces and also ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament. It has to be taken into account, however, that abnormalities in spinal imaging correlate very poorly with symptoms, such that a diagnosis based on spinal MRI abnormalities has to be very critically evaluated in the context of the clinical picture.

How Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diagnosed

Muscles

Right now, theres no test to tell if someone has chronic fatigue syndrome. Doctors ask a lot of questions . They also will do a thorough physical exam.

Doctors also usually order blood, urine , or other tests to check for conditions that cause similar symptoms. They may send a person to see other specialists to help with the diagnosis.

A doctor may suggest meeting with a psychologist or a therapist who can see whether mental health disorders might contribute to or mask CFS.

People With Fibromyalgia May Also Experience:

  • Difficulty concentrating and rememberingsometimes referred to as the “fibro fog”

  • Dizziness

  • Pain during and after exercise

  • Painful menstrual periods

  • Sensitivity to touch, light, and sound

  • Stiffness when you wake up or when you’ve been in one position too long

Many conditions overlap with fibromyalgia, though researchers have yet to determine the precise correlation. These common “co-existing” conditions include:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Irritable bladder

  • Migraine headaches

  • Raynaud’s Syndrome

  • Restless legs syndrome

  • TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder

It’s important to remember that fibromyalgia is a misunderstood condition, and it is often incorrectly diagnosed as a similar disorder . To ensure that you are correctly diagnosed, pay close attention to all your symptomsno matter how subtle. You may find it helpful to keep a diary to record day-to-day pain severity. You’ll then be better able to accurately talk about your fibromyalgia symptoms with your doctor.

Does Pain Satisfy These Requirements

Pain has been shown to satisfy these three requirements and more . Pain is a unique qualitative experience that is normally not confused with any other sensory experience. While there is not a specific form of energy associated with pain, all peripheral stimuli that induce pain, damage tissue, or threaten tissue damage if the stimulus is sustained constitute a consistent effective form of energy. Therefore, the form of energy is a damaging form of energy. The specific receptors for the energy are nociceptors that are tuned to energy that can damage tissues. A specific transmission system for pain includes the superficial dorsal horn of the spinal cord, the spinothalamic tract and portions of the thalamus, insular cortex, and cingulate gyri of the brain . Understanding the concept of pain as a specific sensory system has enabled the discovery of molecular receptors that allow sensory endings to be sensitive to the stimuli causing damage and pain. This concept has also led to the discovery of modulating substances, such as opioids that can selectively reduce pain by acting at particular regions of the brain and spinal cord.

Joint Pain: Youre Not Alone

In a recent national survey, nearly one out of every three adults in the US reported having joint pain within the last 30 days. In this survey, deep pain was the most common complaint, followed by shoulder and hip pain

Joints connect your bones together, providing your body with support as you move. Joint pain can impact just about any part of your body, including the ankles, feet and hands. While joint pain can occur at any age, it becomes increasingly common as a person ages.

Damage to your joints caused by injury or disease cannot only interfere with movement, but can also be a common cause of pain. Some of the most common conditions leading to painful joints include rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, osteoarthritis, gout, strains, sprains and other injuries, such as in sports.

As with back pain, joint pain can vary greatly in terms of severity in the amount of time that it lasts. For example, joint pain that resolves within a few weeks is referred to as acute. However, many people suffer from chronic joint pain, or pain that lingers for weeks or months at a time.

Other common causes of joint pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Autoimmune diseases, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Seasonal allergies

Will I Still Be Able To Work With Fibromyalgia

Usually. Most people with fibromyalgia continue to work, but you may have to make changes to do so. You can cut down the number of hours you work, switch to a less demanding job, or adapt a current job. If you face challenges at work, an occupational therapist can help you design a more comfortable workstation or find more efficient and less painful ways to do your job. A number of federal laws protect your rights.

However, if you cannot work because of your fibromyalgia, you may qualify for disability benefits through your employer or the Social Security Administration.

Common Causes Of Acute Fatigue Might Cause Up

At present, we do not know all of the factors that cause upregulation of the molecular receptors responsible for detecting contraction-produced metabolites in muscle sensory neurons. provided evidence that nerve growth factor can maintain and upregulate ASIC receptors and can mediate inflammatory effects on ASIC receptor upregulation. Thus, any event that increases NGF could increase sensory muscle fatigue and pain.

Cytokine receptors have also been demonstrated on sensory neurons, . As cytokines have been implicated in the symptoms of a number of viral infections, including Epstein-Barr , it is quite likely that viral infections induce muscle fatigue and muscle pain by sensitizing the sensory muscle afferents that signal muscle fatigue and pain. Whether these effects include upregulation of the molecular receptors that encode metabolites is unknown but also seems likely. Thus, acute viral infection could cause myalgia and fatigue through cytokine pathways.

Systemic Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases

Although patients with an early stage of a systemic inflammatory rheumatic disease may have generalized body pain, it can be expected that identifiable physical or laboratory abnormalities will develop over time, but with caution that a single abnormal laboratory test is generally not sufficient evidence to diagnose an inflammatory rheumatic disease., Although joint swelling is the hallmark of many inflammatory rheumatic diseases, some may have less prominent joint symptoms and rather present with a diffuse pain syndrome, but often with accompanying systemic symptoms or additional clues on the history. Therefore, the early stages of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis , systemic lupus erythematosus , Sjogren syndrome, mixed connective tissue disease, scleroderma, or inflammatory spondyloarthritis may present with an FM-like onset. In many cases, this also raises the question of comorbid FM that aggravates the quality of life and increases the burden of the disease for these conditions. It must also be remembered that a patient may previously have had FM, but then may at a later time develop another disease. The following are descriptions of some common rheumatic conditions that may initially present similar to FM. Red flags gathered by medical history and physical examination indicating potential inflammatory rheumatic disease are summarized in Table .
