The 3 Best Supplements For Adrenal Fatigue
In my naturopathic practice, I treat fatigue on a very regular basis. No one likes to feel tired and out of commission, and often a month-long adrenal program can have immense benefits in getting people up and over the hump. Here are the 3 supplements that I think really work for fatigue. Dr. Wilson was the first person to identify this combination, but in 13 years of practice using a number of different protocols, I still think its the protocol that works the best for adrenal fatigue:
For Mitochondrial Dysfunction Try That:
Adrenal fatigue and mitochondrial dysfunction are complex health issues to tackle. While these supplements provide a critical start, consider making an appointment with your local Natural Grocers Nutritional Health Coach for one-on-one guidance.
C: Connection + Vitamin C
Connection: Connecting with others and maintaining our social interactions is a vital part of managing stress. Isolating ourselves can increase anxiety, depression, and feelings of overwhelm. Our social interactions can help provide a sense of connection and safety during times of stress. This includes intimacy with our partner, maintaining friendships, and quality time with our children, parents, and other loved ones.
Tip: We spend a lot more time with technology instead of with other people these days. Take the time to really connect to those around you, without technology intervening. Make a conscious effort to put your phone away and spend some real quality face to face time with others.
Vitamin C Your adrenal glands have a high concentration of vitamin C and require vitamin C to produce cortisol. This means your adrenals are using up vitamin C at a more rapid rate, and need extra replenishment, during and after periods of high stress.
Tip: Add some kiwi, grapefruit, strawberries, bell pepper, broccoli, oranges, and Brussels sprouts to your menu for the week to load up on vitamin C.
Vitamin C supplementation has been shown to help lower cortisol levels, especially after intense stress .
Note: If youre going to supplement, quality and source matter. Some vitamin C supplements are high in sugar watch out! Also, look for a vitamin c supplement that is from a non-corn source to allow you to take higher doses without undesireable side effects.

How Do You Overcome Adrenal Fatigue
Adrenal fatigue is not a condition that you can supplement yourself out of. Supplements have their place in treating adrenal fatigue. But they wont bring about a cure on their own. The underlying or root cause needs to be identified and removed before your body will be able to recover.
For more information on the common causes of adrenal fatigue, please see my previous post.
Fish Oil For Easing Mental Stress
Omega 3 fatty acidsresearch has shown it may help support adrenal health by easing the bodys response to mental stress. Fish oil is anti-inflammatory and supports cell fluidity which is important for healthy communication between cells. As catecholamines, cortisol, insulin, and other hormones are being overproduced during stress, cells will begin to get numb or deaf to these messages from overexposure.
As the cell becomes more resistant, the body does not respond to the messages resulting in fatigue, insulin resistance, inflammation and poor immune health. Fish oil can resensitize these receptors and support these chemical pathways in the body.
Take a high potency fish oil delivered in the natural triglyceride form. Take 800-1000 mg each of EPA and DHA. Look on the back of the label to see each of these listed out, dont pay attention to the 1000 mg listed on the front of most labels.
Only use fish oil products that are molecularly distilled and filtered to ensure purity and to maximize the removal of heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, PCBs, and other contaminants.
To make it easier for you, I have also created the Adrenal Repair Kit which consists of all the critical vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Getting the Kit will also save you 15% as compared to getting the single products.

Adrenal Fatigue Vs Addisons Disease
Though adrenal fatigue is not officially recognized by the mainstream medical community, there is a severe condition called Addisons disease that is a conventional diagnosis.
Adrenal insufficiency can be primary or secondary. Addisons disease, the common term for primary adrenal insufficiency, occurs when the adrenal glands are damaged and cannot produce enough of the adrenal hormone cortisol. The adrenal hormone aldosterone may also be lacking. Addisons disease affects 110 to 144 of every 1 million people in developed countries.1
Secondary adrenal insufficiency occurs when the pituitary glanda pea-sized gland at the base of the brainfails to produce enough adrenocorticotropin , a hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands to produce the hormone cortisol. If ACTH output is too low, cortisol production drops. Eventually, the adrenal glands can shrink due to lack of ACTH stimulation. Secondary adrenal insufficiency is much more common than Addisons disease.

You Feel Puffy Stiff And Sore
Your body reacts to stressful events, like giving a talk in front of 200 people, by getting adrenaline and cortisol flowing so youre energized and focused, Dr. Blum says. But when youre constantly stressed, your adrenals become pooped and your cortisol levels plummet, leading to non-specific symptoms like feeling puffy, or stiff and achy in your joints and muscles, she says.
The fix: Get your adrenal glands evaluated , says Dr. Blum. But she warns that conventional docs dont necessarily know how to recognize the symptoms or treat the condition.

My Favorite Supplements For Adrenal Fatigue
There are several go-to supplements that I often recommend to my clients and those in my thyroid or adrenal courses who are struggling with adrenal fatigue.
What is the role of the adrenals?
The adrenals are responsible for sending the hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline into the bloodstream during times of stress. They make hormones such as DHEA and aldosterone, and they also make hormones that your body then uses to make other hormones such as testosterone and estrogen.
The adrenals are also part of the HPA axis. The pituitary, hypothalamus, and adrenals constantly communicate with one another throughout the day. When the body perceives stress emotional, mental, physical, environmental, etc. the hypothalamus tells the adrenals, via the pituitary, to work harder to put out additional cortisol, and it tells the pituitary to produce more TSH. This tells the thyroid to slow down, and sometimes it can actually cause TSH to lower, causing the thyroid to produce excess thyroid hormones.
As you can see, supporting the adrenals is foundational to hormone balance!
To read more about the adrenals and specific steps you can take to balance these glands, .
Lets look at some specific supplements that can be game-changers when it comes to adrenal support.

What Is Adrenal Fatigue Steps To Overcome It Naturally
Did you know that chronic stress can affect your bodys ability to recuperate from physical, mental or emotional stress? This is likely why most people have dealt with adrenal fatigue at some point in their lives.
Many proponents of this condition estimate that almost every person can experience adrenal fatigue, also known as hypoadrenia, to some degree at a particularly stressful point in his or her life.
Because the adrenals influence many parts of the body, symptoms of adrenal fatigue can mimic a number of disorders and isnt always easily recognizable.
Adrenal fatigue symptoms, like brain fog, moodiness and trouble sleeping, can be indicative of many disorders and are often overlooked by doctors. But more and more people are starting to realize that a combination of these health issues often indicate the onset of adrenal fatigue.
If you have adrenal fatigue, it can have significant effects on your overall health. Luckily, you can improve this common issue naturally by focusing on your nutrient intake and lifestyle choices.
Is Adrenal Fatigue Real
The term adrenal fatigue was first used in 1988 by the alternative medicine expert James Wilson. Even though the term is VERY popular, it is not yet recognized as a valid medical condition by The Endocrine Society or the medical experts society overall.
In fact, there is no established way to validate that someone suffers from adrenal fatigue. Some doctors might take blood or saliva tests, but these are not scientific validation that you have the condition.
Simply matching the symptoms with adrenal fatigue can also distract you from discovering a more serious health problem which has the same symptoms. These include adrenal insufficiency, anxiety, and depression.
Also, the misleading diagnosis might be the reason for taking the wrong medicine. Being prescribed adrenal hormone medicine solely on the vague symptoms can cause temporary adrenal glands dysfunctions or even lead to a condition called adrenal crisis.
On the other hand, if you know you dont have any underlying conditions, you can fight off the adrenal fatigue symptoms in a healthier way, instead of drowning yourself in caffeine.
You can start by switching to a diet that will help with your adrenal fatigue. Combine that with the right natural supplements and youll be as good as new.

What Is Adrenal Fatigue
The adrenal glands, walnut-shaped organs that are found above the kidneys, are responsible for producing stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine. When released in the right amounts, all of these hormones serve a useful purpose.
Normally, the stress hormone cortisol is naturally high in the morning, as one of its purposes is to keep you alert. It continues to decline throughout the day and cortisol is lowest at night, when you want to wind down to sleep.
When you have adrenal fatigue, however, the production of cortisol could be too high or too low at different times of the day. This is why many people with adrenal fatigue may feel extremely tired in the morning and wired at the end of the day and cannot fall asleep. This is because cortisol is not functioning normally. This causes a vicious cycle in which you wake up feeling tired with decreased levels of energy throughout the day.
Pantothenic Acid For Adrenals
Pantothenic acid was first linked to the bodys main stress regulatory center, the hypothalamuspituitaryadrenal axis, in research released in the 1950s. Pantothenic acid helps the adrenal glands produce healthy amounts of cortisol. In rodent models, pantothenic acid deficiency leads to a decrease in the function of the adrenal cortex, the outer area of the adrenal gland. Conversely, replenishing pantothenic acid by injecting animals with pantothenic acid derivatives similar to calcium pantothenate led to an improvement in the production of cortisol and other hormones by the adrenals.
A human study found that the use of vitamin B5 reduced the rise in urinary cortisol metabolites. This indicated that vitamin B5 can suppress the excessive secretion of cortisol that occurs during times of stress.
Adrenal Bovine Extract
A lot of naturopathic and integrative health care practitioners use adrenal bovine extract to support adrenal health. These are extracts of dried whole adrenal glands and extracts of the outer cortex section of the adrenal glands from cows. These extracts contain hydrocortisone and are helpful in cases of adrenal exhaustion. They may help replenish depleted cortisol.
