Q: Any Last Advice On The Benefits Of Magnesium

Fibromyalgia: Chronic Fatigue and Magnesium

A: There is one way in which topical magnesium is useful, but often underused.

In emphasizing a holistic, natural approach that focuses on care for the body, mind and spirit, Epsom salt is very beneficial in reducing stress and muscle pain when used in the bath.

Helping manage daily stress and minimizing pain is an important step in feeling well mentally and physically.

Magnesium also can help reduce the frequency of migraines. Its often recommended for those who suffer from vestibular, ocular and common migraines.

Ultimately, making sure your body is getting enough magnesium not only helps you maintain good health in general, it also may help you manage stress, migraines or muscle aches and pains.

Dont ignore feelings of tiredness or weakness. Its a good idea to talk to your doctor if you notice any of these signs to find out whats behind your symptoms.

How Is Cfs Diagnosed

  • There is no specific diagnostic test for CFS. A diagnosis of CFS first requires that other potential causes of fatigue be ruled out.
  • Diagnostic criteria for CFS include chronic, unexplained fatigue for at least six months, which is of new onset, is not the result of ongoing exertion, is not substantially relieved by rest, and hinders occupational, social, or personal activities.
  • Two additional symptoms must also be present: unrefreshing sleep and post-exertional malaise .
  • Impaired memory or concentration and/or worsening of symptoms on standing up or sitting upright is also necessary for a diagnosis of CFS.

Putting It All Together

Ive been using Doctors Best High Absorption Magnesium for over a year and love the value for money offered in this supplement. It has shown to have beneficial effects on my tight muscles, my energy levels and improved sleep quality.

The price is great for a quality supplement and Doctors Best High Absorption Magnesium doesnt give me the nasty digestive side effects I experienced from other magnesium supplements. If for any reason I run out of this supplement, I really feel the difference not taking it has on my body. My muscles get tight and Im definitely not as chilled.

Causes Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Magnesium Deficiency

We still know very little about chronic fatigue, and sadly, the cause is still unknown. While researchers continue to search for the root cause of CFS, there are preliminary findings that hormonal imbalances, poor immune system response, viral infections, chronic low blood pressure and nutritional deficiency are contributing factors.

In addition, research indicates that chronic fatigue syndrome may be linked to oxidative stress, Celiac disease, and food sensitivities or food allergies.

Most researchers believe that its a combination of factors that can vary from individual to individual. Viruses that can cause CFS include HHV-6, HTLV, Epstein-Barr, measles, coxsackie B, parovirus and cytomegalovirus.

Treatment Plans For Me/cfs

There’s no single way of managing ME/CFS that works for everyone, but there are a number of treatment options.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence says you should be offered a treatment plan tailored to your symptoms.

Your doctor should discuss all of the options with you, and explain the benefits and risks of any treatment.

They should work with you to develop a treatment plan that suits you and takes into account your circumstances and preferences.

You may need advice about making lifestyle changes, specialist treatments, or a combination of both.

If your symptoms are severe, your doctor should ask a specialist for advice.

Your treatment plan should be reviewed regularly.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a non-invasivetreatment that involves passing an electromagnetic field through parts of the brain to modulate neural signaling. Although rTMS has been studied for several conditions, including major depression, schizophrenia, recovery in stroke, and CFS,144-146 the number of subjects in these studies was small. A case series in seven patients who underwent a 3-day course of rTMS reported that most of the patients experienced an improvement in fatigue.146 Another trial used rTMS in 22 patients with CFS, divided into two groupsâsevere and mildâand noted significant improvement in fatigue symptoms in both groups.147

In a study of 30 fibromyalgia patients comparing rTMS treatment to sham treatment, pain intensity was significantly reduced from day 5 to week 25 and long-term improvement in fatigue and sleep were noted in the treatment group.148 Similar results in pain improvement and quality of life were observed in another fibromyalgia study with treatment and placebo arms, using high frequency rTMS.149 Although more studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of rTMS in CFS, it has been suggested this modality may be useful in conditions involving multiple types of difficult-to-treat pain.150

What Does Magnesium Do

  • Helps cells produce metabolic energy.
  • Plays an important role as an essential mineral.
  • Provides muscle and tendon support.
  • Helps bones stay strong.
  • Supports a healthy immune system.

A far reaching mineral, magnesium is a component of the ocean, plants, earth and animals. In humans, around 60% of magnesium can be found in your bones with the remainder being located in soft tissues, muscles and blood.

All of your body cells need it in order to function properly but it is estimated that almost 50% of people in the U.S. may not be getting enough magnesium.

If you eat a balanced diet you would think youd be getting enough magnesium, however magnesium in food sources is declining.

This is most likely due to poor farming practices like pesticide use and overuse of growing fields in an effort to increase yields. Unfortunately, this results in soil depletion of essential minerals. However, eating organic food can help negate this effect.

Magnesium rich foods include:

Increase Your Vitamin B Intake

MY MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY AND THE FATIGUE, HEART PALPITATIONS & TREMORS THAT CAME FROM IT

According to a study published in the Journal of Royal Society of Medicine, researchers found a direct link between reduced vitamin B levels and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Vitamin B6

The study focused on B-6, riboflavin and thiamine, and researchers believe that B6 is particularly important. Vitamin B6 rich foods include wild tuna and salmon, bananas, grass-fed beef, sweet potatoes, turkey, hazelnuts, garlic and cooked spinach.

Vitamin B6 helps to prevent and relieve fatigue, and it supports a healthy immune system. As stated above, some researchers believe that certain viruses play a role in CFS, therefore increasing B6 levels can be a helpful treatment. B6 helps supports T-cell functioning, allowing them to more adeptly fight infections.

Importance of Methylation

Methylation is the term given to the process in the body where methyl compounds are used in the critical functions of the body immune function, energy production, mood, inflammation, nerve function, detoxification, and even DNA all of which are challenges in chronic fatigue syndrome patients.

Methylation helps you process toxins, make hormones, and even helps in the production of neurotransmitters such as melatonin. How well your body can methylate effects all of these important areas. Poor methylation can lead to a variety of chronic conditions including certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, allergies, digestive upset, mood and psychiatric disorders, and chronic fatigue.

Magnesium Supplementation For Fibromyalgia Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And Low Energy: Does It Work

A lack of energy or tiredness is one of the most common complaints patients bring to primary care givers . Surveys of adults in the US and Europe estimate that 20% to 30% experience significant fatigue . Fatigue, unfortunately, is often an intractable complaint across several studies in Canada, the US and Britain, symptoms of fatigue persisted in most patients six months to a year after their initial complaint to a health care provider .

It is not surprising that the demand for energy supplement is on the rise. According to Nutraceuticals World , for people who take dietary supplements, energy is now the number two health concern theyre looking to address, with 30% of users citing this need, according to the Council for Responsible Nutritions 2016 Consumer Survey on Dietary Supplements .

In the quest for more energy, many people have turned to caffeine and other stimulants, natural and synthetic. Some of these have dangerous side effects, including nervousness and sleeplessness . Market watchers have noted a shift in demand for alternatives to energy supplements that are natural, organic and non-stimulating .

Magnesium supplements are one such natural, non-stimulating alternative, and the research shows promise for the role of magnesium in increasing energy.

To better understand the efficacy of magnesium, here well look at the clinical data on magnesium supplementation for fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome , and athletics.

S To Overcome Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

By Kathleen McCoy, BS

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a chronic illness characterized by extreme fatigue that lasts for more than six months. This fatigue cannot be explained away by an underlying medical condition. In fact, one of the diseases principle challenges is that its impossible to diagnose with laboratory tests. However, some professionals believe it is closely related to adrenal fatigue or system wide inflammation of the body.

The process for diagnosis usually begins with ruling out possible underlying diseases and chronic conditions until the only choice left is chronic fatigue syndrome. Left untreated, it decreases stamina, memory and concentration.

Chronic fatigue syndrome can result in strained relationships with friends and family, especially when it remain undiagnosed and/or untreated. Guilt, anxiety and anger are all common emotional responses for those fighting chronic fatigue.

Currently, over 1 million Americans are suffering from this debilitating illness that manifests with a lack of energy and motivation, and women are 24 times more likely than men to be diagnosed.

Is Magnesium An Energy Supplement

Supplementing With Magnesium For Fibromyalgia ...

As this paper describes, positive, significant results have been demonstrated among patients with FM, CFS, and healthy individuals during exercise. The research suggests that magnesium supplementation can improve energy and performance, even among those who are not magnesium deficient.

Accurate testing of magnesium deficiency is, in any case, not widely available. According to Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D. , the best method is via Ionized Magnesium Testing, which is not widely available. The Magnesium RBC test is more accessible to the public but less accurate, and serum magnesium testing is less accurate still .

Whether healthy or presenting with a fatigue related condition, patients should be made aware of the role of magnesium in energy. If a reliable test is not available but symptoms of magnesium deficiency are present, supplementation is a safe, effective option for most.

Articles On Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

There are lots of alternative treatments for chronic fatigue syndrome â also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis or Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease . These range from acupuncture to nutritional supplements, and people get different degrees of relief from them.

Thereâs much less research about the risks and benefits from alternative treatments. That doesnât necessarily mean that these approaches donât work. It just means that there isnât a lot of evidence one way or the other. But they help some people and are generally safe to try.

Just like with any other type of treatment, itâs best to talk with your doctor first, so they know all the strategies youâre trying. They can help you research what could work and watch out for any side effects.

Build Peace And Relax

CFS can be debilitating both physically and mentally. Suffering from persistent exhaustion, reduced brain cognition, chronic muscle and joint pain, stress, and even guilt takes a toll on the body, and psyche.

Long-term stress control and relaxation must be a vital portion of any protocol used to overcome chronic fatigue syndrome. While seemingly impossible, its imperative that sufferers of CFS do their best to effectively manage stress, and rest.

The Power of Rest

Rest means more than just sleep. Dedicate one day per week when you dont have any responsibilities or commitments. Truly commit to a full day of rest. This gives your body and mind a much-needed respite helping to fight stress, anxiety and exhaustion. Its also important during the week, if you are having a particularly difficult day, to not overtax yourself.

While regular exercise supports wellness and helps to diminish stress, individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome need to exercise at a controlled intensity. High-intensity workouts can leave you drained for several days.

Exercise Therapy

Exercise therapy has been shown to help with fatigue, mental clarity and depression in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. According to a study released in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, individuals with CFS were recommended to perform aerobic activities, at the clinic twice per month, in combination with at-home exercises for roughly 5-15 minutes in duration, five days per week.

Which Form Of Magnesium Is Best To Take

Cheap magnesium supplements may be produced from suspect forms of magnesium. Magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide are commonly used in lower cost supplements where the manufacturers are not focusing on maximum absorption.

Those less costly forms of magnesium are not easily absorbed by the body, so it is really false economy. Additionally, magnesium oxide can be very irritating to the digestive tract. You are throwing your hard-earned cash away if your body cannot readily use your chosen magnesium supplement.

Doctors Best High Absorption Magnesium is produced in a chelated form, meaning the minerals it contains are bound to other molecules to form an easily absorbable mineral complex.

I tried a few magnesium supplements that either didnt make much difference to my health or even worse gave me a badly upset stomach, then I tried this Doctors Best product.

This is the only one I can take in a fairly high dose to help with my muscle pains and tight tendons that doesnt give me the runs.

Mitigation Of Encumbrance Symptoms

Nutritional Supplements for CFS & Fibromyalgia

Optimal management/treatment of the encumbrance-linked abnormalities outlined in this article and the supporting literature warrants further study . At a minimum, avoiding the noted common postural risk factors and intense/repetitive neuro-dynamic movement of sensitive neuromuscular tissues is advisable. The use of special furniture/accessories may aid relevant behavior change e.g., rocking kneeling chairs/wobble cushions and vertebral support belts/braces.

Manual physical therapy focused on mild functional exercises and gentle stretching, intended to gradually increase ROM and reduce neuromuscular tension, may prove beneficial. Physical therapists should be aware, however, that the DRG may be sensitive/inflamed and that manipulation of this region, as well as direct nerve mobilization , has the capacity to exacerbate symptoms considerably .

Overcoming physical activity avoidance and facilitating physical rehabilitation are considered important recovery goals . If progress here is to be optimally sustained, then related endeavors will, thus, remain within dynamic, individualized parameters, reflecting: Levels of strength and stamina , peripheral sensitivity , limited energy envelopes , and delayed mitochondrial energy and muscular recovery .

What Novel And Emerging Therapies Appear Promising For Cfs

  • DHEA replacement therapy in women who had CFS and low DHEA-S levels significantly improved fatigue, pain, memory, and sexual functioning.
  • Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation , a non-invasive brain simulation technique, may be a useful therapeutic approach for helping manage symptoms of CFS.

Eliminate Food Sensitivities And Allergens

More and more research is pointing to a link between food allergies and sensitivities and chronic fatigue syndrome. Allergies to certain foods, pollen, metals and other environmental chemicals may be causing the rising number of individuals with CFS.

According to a study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, IBS, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue are linked, and researchers were surprised. In a study of 84 patients that had been referred for unexplained digestive problems, nearly all patients qualified for a diagnosis of IBS, 85 percent had chronic fatigue syndrome and 71 percent had fibromyalgia. The common denominator, researchers in this study believe, is poor digestion and food sensitivities.

Gluten & Other Common Intolerances

For example, one of todays most common food sensitivities is agluten sensitivity. Lactose intolerance, a casein allergy and an intolerance of other common allergens also may be at the root of chronic fatigue. Other common allergens include tree nuts, peanuts, dairy, soy, shellfish and yeast.

I suggestion is to consider taking an IgG test to help you determine the foods that you are sensitive to then you can eliminate them from your diet. By getting rid of your personal known allergens, symptoms of IBS, ADHD, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic fatigue can potentially be relieved.
