Ozempic: Foods To Avoid While Taking Semaglutide

Wondering whether you need to stick to a special diet when taking Ozempic®? There are no hard and fast rules for what you can and canât eat while taking Ozempic, a GLP-1 medication thatâs prescribed for type 2 diabetes and for weight loss. No foods are strictly âoff-limitsâ when taking Ozempic®âin other words, thereâs nothing to need to worry about that could prevent the medication from working normally.

However, there are a few guidelines youâll want to keep in mind in order to maximize weight loss and improve metabolic health while taking Ozempic®. Read on to learn more.

What Is Ozempic Used For

Ozempic is FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Ozempic isnt for people with type 1 diabetes, nor is it safe to use during pregnancy.

While Ozempic can cause weight loss, it isnt approved by the FDA to be used as a weight-loss medication. However, here it is worth discussing ozempic vs wegovy. Wegovy is a different brand name for the same drug, and it was approved for weight management in 2021. Therefore, Wegovy could be an option for those without type 2 diabetes who want to lose weight.

Ozempic is typically prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes who arent achieving blood sugar targets. Your healthcare provider might recommend Ozempic if youre not thriving on other diabetes medications like metformin.

One of the benefits of Ozempic is that its a once-weekly injection, which is a major plus for those who dont want to take daily insulin injections, who have erratic schedules or struggle with remembering to take daily medications.

How Long Do Ozempic Side Effects Last

In general, mild side effects of Ozempic should be temporary or manageable while youre using the drug.

However, after stopping Ozempic, it could take your body about 5 weeks after your last dose to fully clear the drug from your system. So you could have side effects during this period.

And you could experience some serious side effects, such as worsening diabetic retinopathy, even after Ozempic has been fully cleared from your system.

If you have questions or concerns about how long side effects from Ozempic could last, talk with your doctor.

Does Semaglutide Have Side Effects

Semaglutide is a prescription medication, which means that it has the potential to cause side effects in anyone that takes it.

However, not everyone will experience side effects, though some may find that they experience them fairly intensely.

Unfortunately, this can be a bit like a lottery, as each individual reacts differently to medications.

The only way to find out if you can tolerate it or not is to try it if your doctor or prescriber has agreed that its safe for you.

Luckily, most people that do experience side effects from Semaglutide say that they go away on their own within a few weeks of treatment, and are usually bearable once youve made some changes to minimise the risk of certain symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

If you do experience any side effects whilst taking Semaglutide, myBMI is here to help.

Simply get in touch with us and explain your symptoms, and we can prescribe suitable supporting treatments to help you deal with any side effects that you encounter all included in the cost of your consultation.

Does The Drug Cause Bloating As A Side Effect

Yes, Ozempic may cause bloating as a side effect. This is because Ozempic works partly by slowing the movement of food from the stomach to the intestines. This helps your body absorb the sugar in your food more slowly, allowing for better blood sugar control. Bloating and other gastrointestinal side effects can be managed by letting your body gradually adjust to the medication. Your doctor will help you do this by prescribing a low dose to start with and gradually increasing the dose.

In very rare cases, Ozempic causes pancreatitis . It can be either short-term or long-term. If you have ever had pancreatitis, you should tell your physician before starting the treatment. Pancreatitis may cause the following symptoms:

  • Fever

If you have any of the above symptoms, inform your doctor immediately. If the doctor confirms that you have pancreatitis, they will stop your treatment with Ozempic and manage the condition.

How Is Ozempic Used

Ozempic comes in easy-to-use prefilled disposable injector pens of 0.5mg, 1 mg or 2mg strengths. Since Ozempic has a long half-life , it only needs to be given once per week. Select one day of the week and make that your Ozempic day. To help you remember, you can mark your calendar or set a reminder alarm in your phone.

If you miss your day and remember within five days, administer it as soon as possible and set that day of the week as your NEW Ozempic day. If it is less than two days away from your next dose, wait the two days to administer.

Choose an administration site on your stomach , thigh, or upper arm. After uncapping the pen place the pen tip against your skin. Now, you are ready to press the injection button. Keep the button pressed down for 5-10 seconds to ensure complete dose delivery. Each week use a different injection site or rotate within that side. Each pen only contains four doses. Once empty, dispose the pen in a sharps container. New pens should be stored in a refrigerator, away from light in the original box.

Tiredness And High Blood Sugar Levels

My #Ozempic 1 Year Results Update – Size 18 to Size 12 Weight Loss Journey.

Blood glucose levels go high when there is either insufficient insulin or the insulin is not working effectively enough .

To provide us with energy, insulin is needed to transport glucose from blood into our cells to be used for energy.

When there is not enough insulin, or the insulin isnt working effectively, it means the sugar in our blood cannot get into our cells and therefore our cells do not receive the energy they need. As a result, we feel tired.

Is Ozempic An Insulin

Ozempic is not insulin but is a different type of diabetes medicine called GLP-1. It is a small protein like insulin and because proteins are easily broken down by stomach acids, which would make the protein inactive, both insulin and Ozempic need to be injected under the skin. this allow the molecule to get into the body but bypasses the gut.

Can Semaglutide Cause Thrush

Thrush isnt mentioned as a side effect on any official documentation for any forms of Semaglutide, so it shouldnt be an issue for most people.

However, those with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk of experiencing thrush due to increased blood glucose levels.

If you do experience thrush when taking Semaglutide, you should speak to a local pharmacist about treatments that you may be able to use.

Most treatments for thrush dont require a prescription.

Genital thrush is more common in women than in men, and there are a multitude of different causes for it, so it may be your underwear, scented hygiene products, or even bath bombs in some cases that could be the culprit for a yeast infection.

However, if you do experience thrush either for the first time or more often since starting Semaglutide, you should speak to your doctor or prescriber about it so that the cause can be determined.

Maintain A Healthy Diet:

Healthy diet

It is recommended to maintain a healthy diet during the initial few weeks of Wegovy. The diet should be rich in nutrients including vitamins and minerals.

People may also be advised to take low-calorie snacks in between meals. A protein diet may be more suitable as it is less likely to cause nausea and gastric upset. A protein diet is also likely to be associated with weight gain.

In addition, because of the low glycemic index of most protein meals, it is less likely to cause an elevation in blood glucose.

Keep yourself hydrated but avoid taking carbonated beverages and fizzy drinks.

How To Stop Ozempic Nausea

If, when taking Ozempic, you experience nausea that persists or affects your health, consult your doctor. The doctor may recommend using medications to manage the nausea symptoms or avoiding foods that can cause it.

Also, the doctor may advise replacing Ozempic with another drug with a similar effect.

Now How Else Does It Work In The Body

Well, in the liver, it reduces the amount of glucose, or sugar, that is released by the liver. The normal situation for a person would be to release sugar into the circulation unless you don’t need it. But in Type 2 diabetes, there is impaired release of glucose out of the liver. Continually the stores are being released into the circulation even though the blood sugar level is elevated. So the third mechanism of action is around slowing stomach emptying and slowing what we call gastric emptying that process leaves food in the stomach for longer therefore there is less necessity to go looking for food and finally, the action is around the effect on the pancreas where GLP-1s both increase the amount of insulin that is produced as well as increase the amount that is released. And the interesting thing about it is that that is predominantly when the blood sugar is elevated. In other words GLP-1s and there are a range of these treatments all have an effect which is predominantly around high sugars and if the sugar becomes low, the effect is switched off, and it is the reason we see very low rates of low blood sugars so called ‘hypos’, or hypoglycemic episodes that occur with GLP1 treatments.

It happens that after the start of taking the drug, you may have unexplained fatigue. You experience a lack of energy and wonder: Does Ozempic cause fatigue?.

Doctors answer: Yes, the drug causes it rarely! According to the clinical study involving 521 volunteers, the Ozempic side effects, with an incidence of > 0.4%, include fatigue, dysgeusia, and dizziness.

The reason is that rapid weight loss is generally associated with asthenia and fatigue.

Since Ozempic causes a feeling of fullness, and due to the direct action of Semaglutide on the brains satiety center, food intake is significantly reduced. Fatigue and asthenia develop as a result of a calorie deficit.
