Fibromyalgia And Fatigue Centers

Last year, in a desperate attempt to find help with my severe CFS and FM, I did a search online and found out about the Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers . These centers, which I believe there are now 13 or 14 nationwide, deal specifically with CFIDS, Fibromyalgia, and hormonal issues.

I have finally found somewhere to go where the doctors and staff truly believe that I am sick and they dont just tell me, You just have to learn to live with it. The staff at F & F are extremely helpful, courteous, empathetic, and wonderful!

These doctors are trained in giving in depth blood work and I was with the doctor on my first visit for over an hour! Yes, that is correct. OVER ONE HOUR!!

The centers use conventional, along with some natural type approaches to treat which include supplements, IV therapy, compounded prescriptions, food allergy testing, etc.

The F & F Centers have found that the large majority of CFS and FM patients have hypothyroidism and other hormonal deficiencies. I know for me I was having severe hormonal issues, but when my family doctor and other specialists checked, my hormone panels were normal. I kept going back though because I knew they werent. But the F & F doctors are trained specifically to do TSH, T3 & T4 panels and they have found that CFIDS and FM patients do not adequately convert T4 to the active T3, which results in low levels of active thyroid hormone and will have low thyroid despite having a normal TSH.

Is There A Test That Diagnoses Fibromyalgia

There isnt a test for fibromyalgia. The pain of fibromyalgia affects the whole body, which isnt typical of other conditions.

One characteristic feature of fibromyalgia is the predictable response of applied pressure to precise points around the body. These pressure points, if found, may provide evidence to support a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

What Can Cause Fibromyalgia

The cause of fibromyalgia isnt fully understood yet, although new information about the condition is continually coming to light thanks to extensive research.

There could be connections between chronic inflammation and neuropathic pain. People who have fibromyalgia feel pain even though theres no identifiable tissue damage, which is a typical symptom of neuropathic pain.

There may be a genetic influence as well because people with fibromyalgia often have close family members who also suffer from the condition. Women are more likely than men to develop fibromyalgia. Having arthritis also increases your risk.

Its more important to understand the imbalances in your bodys basic systems and restore balance, rather than name the disease and match the pill to the ill.

Predictors Of Remission And Symptom Changes

To determine predictors of remission and symptoms, we considered only the 50 subjects who never developed a permanent exclusion. Sixty-two percent of these subjects ever experienced a partial or total remission. There was no association between the report of ever being diagnosed or treated for CFS and remission . Higher fatigue severity scores and larger total number of symptoms were negatively associated with ever experiencing remission. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals from a multivariate logistic regression model were, respectively, 0.389 and 0.724 . Subjects who eventually remitted tended to have fewer symptoms at initial classification but this trend was not statistically significant. Among the 32 subjects with at least two visits, 25% sustained partial remission and 12.5% total remission. By using categories of illness duration of ⤠2 years, 2.1â10 years, and > 10 years, it was found that subjects ill for 2.1â10 years were less likely to sustain remission than subjects ill for ⤠2 years . Subjects ill for > 10 years were also less likely to sustain remission than those with shorter duration of illness, but this trend was not statistically significant . No other variables were associated with sustained remission.

Fibromyalgia can be effectively treated and managed with medication and self-management strategies. You can learn about self-management strategies in the section below titled How can I improve my quality of life?

Fibromyalgia should be treated by a doctor or team of healthcare professionals who specialize in the treatment of fibromyalgia and other types of arthritis, called rheumatologists. Doctors usually treat fibromyalgia with a combination of treatments, which may include:

  • Medications, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Aerobic exercise and muscle strengthening exercise
  • Patient education classes, usually in primary care or community settings
  • Stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga, and massage
  • Good sleep habits to improve the quality of sleep
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy to treat underlying depression. CBT is a type of talk therapy meant to change the way people act or think

In addition to medical treatment, people can manage their fibromyalgia with the self-management strategies described below, which are proven to reduce pain and disability, so they can pursue the activities important to them.

Characteristics At Initial Cfs Classification

Among all fatigued subjects who came to the clinic over the study period, 90 were identified with CFS . Of these, 65 had at least one follow-up visit and thus were considered in this study. Tables âTables22,â,33,â,44,â,55 describe these subjects’ characteristics at initial classification. More than three-quarters of our sample self-reported their onset as gradual and only 13.9% reported ever being diagnosed or treated for CFS .3). A diagnosis of depression was self-reported by 30.8% of the subjects, but only 16.9% had lifetime major depression disorder according to the DIS. The most prevalent CFS symptom was unrefreshing sleep and the most prevalent non-CFS symptom was problems getting to sleep .4). More than 60% were currently employed, and only 16.9% reported unemployment due to the fatiguing illness .5). Approximately 20% reported short duration of fatigue . Back & Neck Pain Relief For Fibromyalgia Patients

Most fibromyalgia treatments rely on medication to manage pain symptoms and ease fatigue. However, these medications are limited in their effectiveness and may have many undesirable side effects. Most treatments, for example, rely on antidepressants or anti-seizure medications not only do these drugs have undesired side effects, but they are also not effective for all patients. If you are searching for an alternative to medication, chiropractic care is an effective, drug-free option for managing pain and alleviating symptoms. While chiropractic care cannot cure fibromyalgia, it can treat many of the symptoms associated with this condition.

In order to understand why chiropractic is effective for managing fibromyalgia back pain and neck pain, it is important to understand the cause for this pain. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia is caused, in part, by an amplification of pain signals, which in turn negatively impacts the brains ability to correctly process and respond to these signals. A spinal misalignment is one possible cause for these amplified brain signals. When the spine is out of alignment, this misalignment may compress nearby nerves, triggering pain. Additionally, this nerve compression affects the central nervous systems ability to effectively send and receive messages between the brain and the bodys organs, and may even be a cause for pain signal amplification.

What Causes Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Fibromyalgia: Mayo Clinic Radio

Fibromyalgia strikes women more often than men, suggesting that hormonal or genetic factors may contribute to its origin it may also be related to chronic fatigue syndrome or lupus. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia creates a heightened sensitivity to pain signals relayed by the central nervous system.

Researchers whove devoted their careers to fibro describe it as a central nervous system disorder with some endocrine and immune involvement a vague, multifarious phenomenon often summarized as hypersensitization. If your body is a guitar, fibro is an amp, turned up way too loud. Every accidental scritch of the pick, every finger-graze on a string its all suddenly deafening.

But that doesnt capture the accompanying frustration. Fibro didnt get a code in the International Classification of Diseases until the 1990s, and its inclusion didnt settle anything. The criteria then involved pushing tender points, checking whether a normally unpainful stimulus felt extreme. Pressing too hard, though, would hurt anybody. It was supposed to be the amount of pressure that causes blanching of your own fingernail, said Sam Whittle, director of the fibromyalgia clinic at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, Australia. What does that actually mean? I dont know. In The Lancet, two clinicians called the diagnosis a label so easily abused as to have become meaningless.

It was a relief that I didnt have to start over. I know theres something wrong with me. My primary care doctor knows theres something wrong with me. Im not a malingerer But to have to start over and look for the answer again was really unappealing.

Fibromyalgia And Chronic Pain

The condition of fibromyalgia creates many challenges for a person with this disorder. These challenges often go far beyond the characteristic chronic pain which alone can be potentially debilitating. Those with fibromyalgia have pain in many locations and the presence of multiple pain sites is often confusing to their doctor or doctors. Family physicians, internists, endocrinologists, and even pain management specialists and rheumatologists often have great difficulty in comprehending the full extent of fibromyalgia and the serious health and well-being issues that are caused by the disorder.

Persons with fibromyalgia have so many symptoms that an uninformed physician may find it easier to refer such patients to a psychologist or psychiatrist. But the physical symptoms of fibromyalgia are real. The sufferers have widespread pain on a chronic basis. Additional symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbances, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, joint stiffness, and cognitive dysfunction . Depression commonly affects those with fibromyalgia.

Owing to the presence of so many chronic symptoms, fibromyalgia is notoriously difficult to treat. Such patients are typically taking multiple medications, prescribed by multiple specialists attempting to combat the problems that fall within their particular branch of medicine – pain management, rheumatology, and psychology/psychiatry.
