Anti Blue Light Glasses

While blue light blocking glasses are effective at reducing the amount of blue light that enter the eyes, there is no current research to suggest that this can improve or protect the health of your eyes. Put simply, there is no scientifically-proven benefit of wearing blue light blocking glasses for your eye health.

As The College of Optometrists states: The best scientific evidence currently available does not support the use of blue-blocking spectacle lenses in the general population to improve visual performance, alleviate the symptoms of eye fatigue or visual discomfort, improve sleep quality or conserve macula health. 8

What To Look For In Blue

Shopping for glasses online is tricky because you cant try them on to find a pair thats both comfortable and complements your face shape. Most over-the-counter glasses are sold in only a size or two, while prescription pairs and some higher-end non-prescription sunglasses usually have three numbers etched into the arms, such as 50-16-135. These are millimeter measurements that correspond to the lens width, bridge width, and arm length, respectively. Remove some of the guesswork by using a pair of well-fitting glasses to figure out your size. Either look at the numbers or, if theyre missing, measure the frames yourself. Try to stick to glasses that closely match those measurements, particularly the bridge and the arm.

Then consider the lens color. All of the glasses Wirecutter tested appeared to be colorless at first glance, but when we wore them, we noticed they all have a faint to moderate orange tint. Orange lenses block blue light because they only let through light with similar wavelengths, like orange and red. The stronger the orange tint, the less blue light gets through, decreasing the amount your eyes are absorbing and potentially helping to counteract negative effects.

What Are Blue Light Glasses

Gaming Glasses Computer Anti Fatigue Blue Light Blocking

Blue light glasses are eyeglasses designed to minimize the amount of blue light entering your eyes from digital devices. They have a surface coating on their lenses that aim to block blue light.

The goal is to reduce digital eye strain, prevent eye diseases, and improve sleep. But more often, people confuse blue light glasses with computer glasses.

Computer glasses are designed to be worn for up-close tasks, like working on a computer. You can add features, such as anti-reflective and anti-scratch coatings. You can also add a coating that protects against blue light. If they are prescription glasses, computer glasses can correct vision issues.

Blue light glasses are simply used to protect against blue light. They are frequently purchased without a prescription however, you can often have a coating that blocks blue light added to your prescription glasses.

How Blue Light Affects Vision

When you consider how often you look at digital screens and how closely you view them, it makes sense that your eyes could be negatively affected in some way.

Light passes through the cornea of the eye and is directed toward the retina at the back of the eye. Its believed that frequent blue light exposure can cause cumulative damage to the retina over an extended period of time.

A short-term issue that can be caused by blue light exposure is digital eye strain, which presents symptoms such as:

  • Neck and shoulder pain

Retinal damage can accumulate over time. This can potentially lead to serious vision conditions, including macular degeneration. Fortunately, eye doctors and researchers have developed products, such as Eyezen lenses, to protect the eyes from prolonged exposure to blue light and combat symptoms of digital eye strain.

What Were Looking For

Blue-light-blocking capability: According to Rahul Khurana, an ophthalmologist and clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, digital eye strain and the negative effects of blue light on your eyes are two separate concerns. We keep on thinking about blue light from our computers and smartphones, but the reality is that we get more exposure to blue light from the sun. Essentially, its not the blue light thats making your eyes feel bad after a day of staring at the computer its staring at a screen for hours without breaks. Thats why Khurana doesnt recommend any special eyewear for daily computer use. Ultimately, Im not really sure how its going to help with digital eye strain, which is whats bothering people, he says, explaining that the digital eye strain most people experience can occur whenever you focus on anything from reading a book, looking at a screen, or watching TV. It can be alleviated by shifting your eyes every 20 minutes or so onto something thats 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds, he says. If that doesnt help, Khurana recommends artificial tears to help lubricate dry eyes. In the end, he says you dont need to wear blue-light-blocking glasses during the day.

All light is measured in nanometers and blue-light wavelengths that can have the most impact on your melatonin levels range from 400 to 500 nm. Blue-light-blocking glasses work by absorbing those wavelengths to stop them from reaching your eyes.

How Eyezen Lenses Work

Eyezen lenses are made using cutting-edge technology that incorporates several different mechanisms:

  • Eyezen Focus Eyezen lenses have a small amount of magnification to allow you to maintain a proper working distance from your screen and avoid holding it too close.

  • Blue light filtering technology This protects the eyes from blue-violet light emitted by digital screens, preventing 20% of blue light from entering the eyes.

  • Wavefront Advanced Vision Enhancement Technology Used to give each lens a unique design, W.A.V.E. Technology provides clarity at any distance, eliminating blur even with poor lighting. Lenses are customized based on your individual single-vision prescription for each eye.

The result of this technology is an Eyezen lens that helps relax and protect your eyes. These lenses allow you to view your digital screens more comfortably, providing clearer near vision and reduced eye strain. In addition, wearers have improved contrast perception and diminished glare.

Eyezen lenses are designed to be worn all day, and can even benefit patients who do not typically wear prescription glasses.

What Is Blue Light

Blue light is electromagnetic energy from digital screens and the sun. It has shorter wavelengths ranging from 420 to 480 nanometers. It contains more energy than other lights, and this energy could potentially be harmful to your eyes.

Blue light from the sun can damage your eye tissues, increasing your risk of developing eye diseases. Too much exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause eye cancer and cataracts.

Do Blue Light Blocking Glasses Really Work

It depends who you ask. There isnt a lot of research to support the use of these screen protection glasses says Phillip Yuhas, O.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the College of Optometry at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. That said, the technology is still new. Some patients do find that some blue light blocking glasses improve subjective comfort while viewing a screen, Yuhas says.

Blue light glasses may also help you get a better nights sleep, says Sunir J. Garg, M.D., a professor of ophthalmology at the Retina Service of Wills Eye Hospital. For some folks, exposing themselves to intense blue light at nighttime can screw up their internal clock, he says. That can mess up certain peoples sleep-wake cycles. There may be some advantage to people using blue light glasses at night if theyre having trouble sleeping.

Ultimately, the evidence is mostly anecdotal but wearing a pair of blue light glasses while looking at screens wont hurt. However, if you have any additional concerns about your eyes or vision, your best bet is to consult with your eye doctor.

I Found Other Ways To Dial Back On Blue Light

Since the glasses made me more aware of blue light, I tried remedying the issue further with small fixes. My iPhone is now set for “Night Shift” from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. The Night Shift function alters the colors of the phone’s display to the warmer end of the color spectrum, so you’re exposed to less blue light that way.

To do this yourself on an iPhone, you can go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift, and set the time you usually start getting ready for bed.

I also zeroed in on non-screen sources of artificial blue lights. I learned that while LEDs are also increasingly popular as room lights, they’re not all the same. Warm white bulbs with less blue tend to work better at night than cool white ones. There are also multiple bulbs that that can change the intensity of a light’s colors with an app, or you can buy reduced-blue LED bulbs for warmer lights in bedrooms.
