The Danner Trail 2650 is roughly double the price of the Mt. Maddsen, but its in a different league.
Danner made the unusual move to place the heel counter on the outside of the boot which makes this hiking boot super secure and comfortable.
If youre planning on doing a lot of hiking over the next few years, I recommend investing in an excellent pair of boots. While the Mt. Maddsen is a solid value, the extra lightweight security and durability of the Danner Trail 2650 is worthwhile if you consider how the boots will perform over several years.

Leather Quality And Care
The upper for the Mt. Maddsen is waterproof treated full grain leather. Im surprised that Timberland is using full-grain leather for such a value-driven boot, but Im not complaining.
The full-grain leather will help with durability and care in the long run, so thats a big bonus for me.
As for the waterproofing, look for yourself:
Water just rolls right off this leather no problem.
Ill probably re-up the waterproofing on these boots every six months, depending on how often I hike.
To keep them in tip-top shape, Ill be applying Timberlands Waximum waterproofing and leather protector.

There are a couple of ways to break in a new pair of hiking boots. First, theres the water submersion method popular with many hikers and some military folks, where you soak the boots for a few hours before wearing them around to work the leather and then letting them dry thoroughly. Theres a bit more to it than this, but the purpose is to make them more pliable and less likely to cause blisters out on the trail.
The other way is for people like me, who just want to hike. This process is to give the boots shorter break-in hikes, and then gradually increase the distance. This naturally softens the leather, and the shorter hikes will give you a sense of potential trouble with the fit before you find yourself 10 miles from civilization and something unexpected happens, like blisters or maybe the glue on your boots dissolving in the middle of a desert. Yes, Im still a little scarred by this.
After clocking about 10 miles or so in this manner, I started phase two of my testing: I brought these on a hiking weekend trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee. I figured traipsing around Lookout Mountain would be a great way to test the limits of these boots. Even Mother Nature helped me up the ante. Over the four days I was there, it rained. A lot.
