Adverse Events And Safety Monitoring

How Chinese Medicine Understands Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Adverse events will be recorded and managed by researchers within 24h. There will be at least one physician to evaluate and manage the adverse events at each centre. Serious adverse and unexpected events will be reported to the Ethics Committee and other supervising departments. The subjects may leave the trial at their own discretion, or the physicians will determine whether the patient will continue or terminate the study. However, the patient will be followed up until they are in a stable condition following the adverse event.

The primary investigator will review all adverse events periodically, and the Ethics Committee and DMC will have access to the interim results. If necessary, a meeting will be held to reappraise the benefits and risk of this trial.

The possible adverse events related to acupuncture treatment include fainting during acupuncture treatment, nausea, haematoma formation, local infection, injury to the viscera or the peripheral nerves, stuck needle, and needle breakage. Adverse events will be evaluated based on the frequency, severity and symptoms of the patients throughout the trials. Patients who are intolerant to the acupuncture treatment should be removed from the trial.

Types Of Outcome Measures

The primary outcome measures were Fatigue Scale and Fatigue Assessment Instrument scores. The secondary outcome measures were Self-Rating Scale of mental state scores, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale scores, Self-Rating Depression Scale scores, clinical symptom scores, immunological indicators , effective rate, and adverse events.

The clinical symptom scores are used to assess the severity of fatigue. The main symptoms and other symptoms of CFS are scored according to their severity, and a higher cumulative score of all symptoms indicates more severe fatigue symptoms. The effective rate is a measure to assess clinical efficacy. It is assessed at the end of treatment using four grades: clinical cure , markedly effective , effective , and invalid .

Gut Issues Food Intolerance Vitamin Deficiencies

Researchers are finding a link between CFS and common food sensitivities to gluten, lactose, and casein. Tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, yeast, and dairy are also implicated.5 I highly recommend having an IgG test to pinpoint any trigger foods that may be a problem.

You may also want to have your serum vitamin B levels checked as people with CFS often have a deficiency in this area. Since many people tend to suffer from poor methylation, its important that your B-complex contains methylated vitamins to improve absorption and utilization. If you are unfamiliar with methylation, it is involved with detoxification and impacts nerve function, cardiovascular and cognitive health, and mood. Foods that are a good source of B-vitamins include: sardines, tuna, lamb, wild salmon, sweet potatoes, hazelnuts, cooked spinach, garlic, and bananas.

Adequate magnesium and potassium are important as well. Magnesium helps to improve energy,6 while potassium can assist with alleviating the irritability, muscle cramps, and fatigue associated with CFS. Spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans, avocados, bananas, and figs are good sources of magnesium. For potassium, focus on white beans, acorn squash, dried apricots, coconut water, spinach, avocados, sweet potatoes and mushrooms.

Advances In Clinical Research On Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Abstract

Chronic fatigue syndrome is one of the most common chronic diseases in modern society and affects patients quality of life to a certain extent. To date, the etiology and pathogenesis of CFS are still not completely clear. Various therapies have been developed, but there is still a lack of specific drugs or treatments. As a kind of adjuvant therapy, traditional Chinese medicine has aroused widespread concern about the improvement of CFS. Although a large number of clinical randomized controlled trials have confirmed the therapeutic effect of TCM on CFS, the exact efficacy is still controversial. This article summarizes the clinical research methods and efficacy of TCM in the treatment of CFS over the past five years from the perspectives of syndrome differentiation, external treatment, and combination therapy.

Description Of The Intervention

Indigestion and Fatigue Kit by GinSen

TCM is a health care system that evolved in China over a period of thousands of years. TCM is estimated to be used by over one quarter of the world’s population, and as “a complete system of medicine, it has been selected by the World Health Organization for worldwide propagation to meet the health care needs of the twentyfirst century” .

The approach to health and healing differs from conventional Western medicine in that disease is believed to be the result of imbalance and disharmony between organ systems in the body and between the body and the environment. In addition, blockage in or deficiency of the bodys vital energy may result in illness. The goal then is to restore balance, harmony, and flow and to strengthen and support the body’s innate healing capacities using therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, diet modification, Tuina massage, therapeutic exercise, and medicinal products, including herbs. Treatment may include one or more of the available therapies and is customized and tailored to the needs of the individual patient. The aetiology of disease is not relevant to treatment, which is instead based on the presentation of patterns of symptoms. Patterns of symptoms may be as numerous as the patients who present them and are not tied to disease classifications. Patients with the same disease classification may present different patterns while patients with different diseases may present the same patterns.

Adjusting The Immune Dysfunction Of Cfs By Tcm Drugs

Immune system dysfunction and its close interactions with the nervous and endocrine systems have been clearly reported in recent years as playing a role in the development of CFS . Hence, maintaining an efficient and equilibrated immune system is a reasonable approach to prevent certain chronic illnesses.

Tcm Approach To Treating Chronic Fatigue

In my view, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a problem better treated by Traditional Chinese Medicine than by Western medicine. TCM practitioners believe that qi deficiency may trigger CFS, and low energy is in turn caused by energy stagnation. Further, its cause may come from internal injury , from the seven emotions, or from an unhealthy lifestyle. I use acupuncture and Chinese herbs to treat this disease, with some success. There is, however, no standard formula.

The formulas listed below are primarily for use by Chinese herbal doctors, or someone with experience in using the formulas, because the symptoms can change and each individuals condition is different. We need to accommodate the symptoms of each person we treat. Sometimes the dosage can be heavy, sometimes light. It is not a simple process. There are also some people who think all herbs are natural and have no side effects. This is incorrect because if the wrong formula is applied to the wrong situation, it will affect the disease and may even damage the patients health.

Vitamin B12 And Folic Acid

Researchers have been exploring whether vitamin B12 injection or other means of supplementation, along with folic acid, can relieve CFS symptoms.

There is a biochemical theory as to how this may be of benefit: People with CFS show reduced methylation which plays a role in gene expression as well as regulation of many of the body’s systems, including detoxification, cardiovascular and the neurologic system. Vitamin B12 and folic acid both promote healthy methylation pathways.

A study of B12 injections in addition to oral folic acid supplementation found that some subjects with CFS responded well, while others had only a mild response. A better response was associated with more frequent injections, lack of use of opioids, and a certain genetic phenotype.

Another study looked at using B12 nasal drops as an alternative to injections in subjects with CFS. This study also found good response in two-thirds of the participants. The researchers demonstrated that those who had a better response had a higher blood level of B12 and were more physically active .

What Is Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue happens when people get stressed out by problems and challenges encountered at home or in the workplace. The adrenal gland releases a large amount of cortisol when facing stress. This is a natural response to the fight-or-flight system that is in everyones body.

You might have also heard this health condition referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis, chronic fatigue syndrome .

The excessive amount of cortisol released by the adrenal gland will now inhibit it from producing other helpful hormones needed by the body to function optimally.

Other diseases and disorders of the adrenal glands include Cushing Syndrome, Addisons Disease and Pheochromocytoma. Interestingly, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome seems to more acutely affect women.
