Chronic fatigue can seriously affect a persons quality of life and wellbeing. It can negatively impact all aspects of their life including family life, social relationships, and work performance.

Food Intolerances And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

CFS is linked to the immune system dysfunction, and this could explain why some sufferers believe certain foods worsen their symptoms.

The best way to identify whether a person is intolerant to a specific food or not, is to follow a food elimination or exclusion diet. The former involves removing suspected foods from the diet to see if symptoms improve, and the latter involves reverting to a very basic diet for a period of time before gradually reintroducing additional foods one at a time, to identify problem foods.

Elimination and exclusion diets could involve removing essential nutrients from the diet and so adequate supervision by a nutritional medicine specialist is recommended.

Another good place to start when indentifying food sensitivities is to keep a food diary of what you eat and when you experience the worsening of symptoms. This could help you to spot any patterns.

Analysis Of Vitamin D

Vitamin D metabolites 25D2 and 25D3 were analysed as previously described. 25D2 and 25D3 were extracted from serum samples, following zinc sulfate protein precipitation, using Isolute C18 solid phase extraction cartridges. Potential interfering compounds were removed by initial elution with 50% methanol followed by elution of the vitamins using 10% tetrahydrofuran in acetonitrile. Dried extracts were reconstituted prior to injection into a high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in the multiple reaction mode. The multiple reaction mode transitions used were 413.2> 395.3, 401.1> 383.3and 407.5> 107.2 for 25D2 and 25D3, and hexadeuterated D3, respectively. The assay was validated against published acceptance criteria . Assay sensitivity was determined by the lower limit of quantification: 25D3=2.5nmol/L and 25D2=2.5nmol/L. Coefficients of variation for the assay were 10% across a working range of 2.5625nmol/L for both 25D2 and 25D3.

The LCMS/MS method used in the present study has previously been validated against other commercially available assays and is regarded as the most valid and reliable technique for the assessment of vitamin D metabolites including 25D2 and 25D3.

What About A Multi Vitamin

Fatigue Helped with High Dose Vitamin B1

Another step in healing and maintaining the body for many people is to add a multiple vitamin/mineral supplement. It must be in addition to the supplements described above, not in place of it. It should contain a wide variety of nutrients including vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K. It should also contain essential trace minerals such as chromium, selenium, zinc, manganese and others.

The basic supplements above will not always supply all of ones needs. However, they are a wonderful start toward obtaining the many vital nutrients needed by our bodies today. These nutrients are not easily available from food, even if one eats only organically grown locally produced food. Combining this with an excellent diet and a very healthful lifestyle can enhance anyones health and joy in life.

    Increase Potassium And Magnesium Intake

Research shows that both potassium and magnesium can help improve the symptoms associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

    Magnesium

In a study published in the UK medical journal The Lancet, chronic fatigue syndrome patients were found to have low magnesium levels that accounted for a low red blood cell count.

In this study, patients that were treated with magnesium supplements self-reported improved energy levels, a more balanced emotional state and less pain. At the end of the six-week study, all patients that were given magnesium had their red cell magnesium levels return to normal.

If you have chronic fatigue syndrome, consider adding these magnesiumrich foods to add to your diet: spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, yogurt and kefir, almonds, black beans, avocados, figs, dark chocolate and bananas.

These delicious foods can help you overcome chronic fatigue, one of the symptoms of a magnesium deficiency, and support healthy nerve function, healthy blood sugar levels, blood pressure regulation, and much more. Its estimated that nearly 80 percent of Americans are currently deficient in this essential mineral.

    Potassium

Potassium is responsible for proper electrolyte balance in the body. Potassium-rich foods include avocados, spinach, sweet potatoes, coconut water, kefir and yogurt, white beans, bananas, acorn squash, dried apricots and mushrooms.

    Treatment Of Candida Infection

Candida albicans is a common resident of the healthy human intestinal tract. However, overgrowth of candida may cause health problems, including CFS-like symptoms, and may be involved in CFS in some individuals. A study found a higher number of C. albicans in fecal samples of CFS subjects during acute CFS symptom exacerbation compared with the remission phase when symptoms were less pronounced.151 A positive response of a large number of patients with CFS to an oral antifungal agent and a diet for intestinal candidiasis has also been described.152 The observational and uncontrolled nature of these studies make more rigorous study of the relationship between candida overgrowth and CFS necessary.

More information on fungal infections and candida is available in the Fungal Infections protocol.

    Vitamin B3 And Vitamin B12

World’s Most Deficient Vitamin! STOP Your Tiredness & Fatigue – Dr. Mandell

All of the B vitamins are important in mitochondrial health. All of them. Thats why taking a supplement of B-complex vitamins will form a solid foundation. But you will need additional support via vitamin B3 and vitamin B12.

    Vitamin B3:

Vitamin B3 is more often known as niacin. If youve ever taken too much of this vitamin youll have experienced redness, or, flushing of your skin with an accompanying itch. This is known as a niacin flush. Fortunately, there are new forms of niacin that make for happy skin and mitochondria.

As far as energy production is concerned, the most important function of vitamin B3 is making your mitochondria more efficient so they can make more energy.

    Dosing:

New forms of vitamin B3 known as nicotinamide riboside seem to be the most efficient at improving mitochondrial and ATP production. If youre unable to find nicotinamide riboside, opt for niacinamide but ensure its a slow-release formula. This will prevent any of the uncomfortable skin reactions.

    Take 500-1500mg daily.

    Vitamin B12:

Vitamin B12 is known as cobalamin. This is the form many supplements come in. But for those with chronic fatigue syndrome, youll want to take your vitamin B12 in its methylated form methylcobalamin.

Vegetarians and vegans are at increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiencies, so if you are on either a vegetarian or vegan diet, ensure you are supplementing B12 daily.

    Dosing:

Bi-weekly or monthly B12 injections or 5000mcg sublingual on a daily basis.

The databases PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Knowledge, and PsycINFO were systematically searched. Articles published between January 1st 1994 and 1990, for CFS and FMS respectively, and March 1st 2017 were included. We focused on the most recent diagnostic guidelines, namely the International Center of Disease Control diagnostic criteria for CFS that was established in 1994 , and the American College of Rheumatology criteria for FMS in 1990 . To retrieve relevant articles from PubMed, we formulated a search string that consisted of CFS, FMS, and synonyms, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients and synonyms, while excluding systematic reviews or animal studies. This search string was adapted according to the thesaurus of the databases EMBASE, Web of Knowledge, and PsycINFO. All included studies were screened for potential references that were not included in the first search. Duplicates were removed, as well as studies including pediatric participants. There were no language restrictions included non-English articles were translated by native speakers.
