Are Swollen Lymph Nodes An Indicator Of Hodgkin Lymphoma

Swollen lymph nodes are a common sign of Hodgkin lymphoma, and its reasonable to be concerned about the possibility of cancer if youve noticed an unusual lump in your neck, armpit or groin. Neck Pain Along The Lymph Nodes Causes

Stiff Neck Sore Throat Headache Fatigue

Neck pain along the lymph nodes can be caused by enlargement of the lymph nodes or inflammation of the lymph nodes . Traditionally, infectious etiologies are the main cause of lymphadenitis. Noninfectious etiologies are usually the main cause of lymphadenopathy however, there can be overlap. Acute causes of lymphadenitis develop over a couple of days and can be very noticeable. These conditions are usually followed-up more promptly than chronic conditions that take time to develop. However, it is important to take note of any symptoms of pain and associated symptoms over time in order to get proper care.

Treating Swollen Glands And When To See A Doctor

Since swollen lymph nodes are often a sign of a cold or other virus, the answer to treating them might be as simple as resting up until your cold passes. “It is really time and the resolution of the viral illness or inciting cause of the swelling that will help the symptoms improve,” Dr. Zack says.

However, you can take certain over-the-counter medications to alleviate the swelling, such as ibuprofen or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat pain and inflammation. That said, you should check with your doctor before taking any medicationsover-the-counter or notto make sure you’re on the right track and don’t need further treatment.

But because swollen lymph nodes may rarely point to a more serious underlying condition, there are situation in which you should see a doctor. “When lymph nodes in the neck are enlarged for more than seven to 10 days or there are no symptoms of a cold virus or other infection such as strep throat, it is vital to talk with the doctor about why this is the case,” Dr. Zack says, adding: “If one area is much larger than others and very painful, or causing any difficulty in breathing or swallowing, it would be recommended to seek medical evaluation immediately.”

The Cleveland Clinic adds that the following symptoms accompanying your swollen lymph nodes are a sign you should get checked out:

How Can Swollen Lymph Nodes Be Prevented

You wouldnt want to prevent swollen lymph nodes. Theyre a sign that your body is fighting an infection or illness. If you hate the discomfort of having swollen lymph nodes, your best bet is to take extra steps to keep from catching common viruses through the following:

  • Avoid touching your eyes and nose.

How Are Swollen Lymph Nodes Treated

If swollen lymph nodes are only found in one area of your body, its called localized swollen lymph nodes. And most of the time, you have a virus so theres no treatment truly needed and it will just run its course. The nodes will gradually shrink back to their normal size.

For some infections, your healthcare provider might recommend medicine to help clear it up.

Generalized swollen lymph nodes mean you have them in two or more areas of your body. This usually points to a more serious systemic disease. These are wide-ranging and may include:

These conditions will require more aggressive treatments over a longer period of time. Your swollen lymph nodes may not return to their normal size until after your treatment has ended.

When Should Swollen Lymph Nodes Be Treated By My Healthcare Provider

Swollen lymph nodes after the COVID-19 vaccine might suggest you already had the virus

Most swollen lymph nodes arent a cause for concern and will go away as your infection clears up. Healthcare providers usually only worry about swollen lymph nodes when they enlarge for no apparent reason. If you have a large, swollen area but youre not feeling sick and you didnt recently have a cold, flu or other infection, see your healthcare provider. Youll need further tests, like blood work, imaging scans or a biopsy.

In rare situations, swollen lymph nodes can point to cancer specifically, lymphoma . Other less common causes of swollen lymph nodes include injury, AIDS and cancer thats spread from the lymph nodes to another part of your body.

See your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms that may indicate that something more serious is going on:

  • Lymph nodes that are more than one centimeter in diameter.
  • Nodes that are very painful, hard, fixed to the skin or growing rapidly.
  • Nodes that are draining pus or other substances.
  • Symptoms like weight loss, night sweats, long-lasting fever, difficulty breathing or fatigue.
  • Swollen nodes close to your elbow, collarbone or lower part of your neck .
  • Red or inflamed skin over your swollen lymph nodes.

Symptoms Of Glandular Fever

Glandular fever is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus . Symptoms are thought to take about one to two months to develop after infection with the virus.

The most common symptoms of the condition include:

  • a high temperature
  • a sore throat this is usually severe, but in an older adult, or very young child, the infection may be present without a sore throat
  • swollen glands in your neck and possibly in other parts of your body, such as under your armpits

Glandular fever can also cause:

  • a general sense of feeling unwell
  • loss of appetite
  • pain around or behind your eyes
  • swollen tonsils and adenoids , which may affect your breathing
  • the inside of your throat to become very red and there may be a whitish coating
  • small red or purple spots on the roof of your mouth
  • swelling or puffiness around your eyes
  • a tender or swollen tummy

Some of these symptoms may develop a few days before the main symptoms mentioned above.

While the symptoms of glandular fever can be unpleasant, most of them should pass within two to three weeks. Fatigue, however, can occasionally last several months.

Enlarged Lymph Nodes In The Neck

Enlarged lymph nodes occur when the node becomes larger as it fills with inflammatory cells. This often is a result of an infection but can occur without a known cause.

You should discuss with a health care provider whether or not your lymph node needs to be checked. Enlarged lymph nodes will usually shrink on their own. To speed up the process, try applying a warm, wet compress to the affected area.

Treatment of swollen lymph nodes varies widely, depending on the cause. If you alert your doctor about your symptoms right away, you can work together to figure out next steps. You might be prescribed antibiotics, advised to watch your condition and wait to see if it gets worse, or be called into the office for a biopsy. Whether the cause is serious or not, your doctor can help steer you in the right direction and get you feeling your best again.

Purpose Of Lymph Nodes

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Helping your body battle infections and other diseases, lymph nodes are bean-shaped, small masses of tissue components of a large lymphatic system. When lymphatic fluid moves through your body, lymphocytes within the lymph glands trap viruses, bacteria and other possibly harmful substances and destroy them. This helps keep these pathogens from spreading any further.

Treatment Of Swollen Lymph Nodes

Self Healing & Cleansing Lymphatic Massage Drainage – Dr. Alan Mandell, D.C.

Swollen lymph nodes may become smaller on their own without any treatment. In some cases, the doctor may wish to monitor them without treatment.

In the case of an infection, you may be prescribed antibiotics or antiviral medications to eliminate the condition responsible for the swollen lymph nodes. Your doctor might also recommend medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen to help relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

Swollen lymph nodes caused by cancer may not shrink back to their normal size until the cancer is treated. Cancer treatment may involve removing the tumor or any affected lymph nodes. It may also involve chemotherapy to shrink the tumor.

Your doctor will discuss which treatment option is best for you.

The only way to prevent swollen lymph nodes is to prevent the conditions that may cause them. Some steps you can take are below:

  • Practice proper dental hygiene to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Other Types Of Lymphoma

All lymphomas start in a particular type of cell called a lymphocyte. Some affect B lymphocytes , while others affect T lymphocytes and, rarely, natural killer cells. While most lymphomas start in B cells, a minorityless than 15 percent of all non-Hodgkin lymphomasare T-cell lymphomas, and fewer than 1 percent affect natural killer cells.

T-cell lymphomas and natural killer T-cell lymphomas may have different symptoms depending on the subtype and location of the cancer. Below are some of the different types of T-cell lymphomas and their associated symptoms.

  • Peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified often causes symptoms such as fever, night sweats and unintentional weight loss.
  • Anaplastic large cell lymphomas may come with symptoms such as fever, backache, painless swelling of lymph nodes, poor appetite, itchy skin, rashes and fatigue.
  • Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma often causes symptoms such as fever, night sweats, rashes and itchy skin.
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma may cause skin changes, which may include flat, rash-looking patches thick, raised and itchy eczema-like plaques and raised bumps.
  • Aggressive natural killer cell leukemia may come with symptoms such as fever, yellowing of the skin , swollen lymph nodes, swelling of the liver or spleen, and potentially skin changes.
  • Extranodal natural killer T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, often causes a blocked nose, bloody nasal discharge, swelling of the cheek, sore throat, hoarseness, fever and weight loss.

What Are The Symptoms Of Infectious Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis usually lasts for 1 to 2 months. The following are the most common symptoms of mononucleosis. However, each person may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • Swollen lymph glands in the neck, armpits, and groin

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Enlarged spleen

  • Head and body aches

  • Liver involvement, such as mild liver damage that can cause temporary jaundice, a yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes due to abnormally high levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream

Once a person has had mononucleosis, the virus remains dormant in the throat and blood cells for the rest of that person’s life. Once a person has been exposed to the Epstein-Barr virus, a person is usually not at risk for developing mononucleosis again.

The symptoms of mononucleosis may resemble other medical conditions. Always talk with your healthcare provider for a diagnosis.
