Sleep apnea is one of the most common sleep disorders. If you or your partner notices loud snoring and you wake up tired and stay that way, you could have sleep apnea. More than one-third of adults in the U.S. snore at least a few nights a week. But if the snoring stops your breathing for seconds at a time, it could be sleep apnea. Learn more about the best sleep positions and see if sleeping on your stomach is bad or not.

Obstructive sleep apnea causes low blood oxygen levels. That’s because blockages prevent air from getting to the lungs. The low oxygen levels also affect how well your heart and brain work. Sometimes, the only clue that you might have sleep apnea is chronic fatigue.

Your doctor may prescribe a medical device called CPAP that helps keep your airways open while you sleep. In severe cases of sleep apnea, surgery may help. Nerve Conditions Which Damage Muscles

Conditions affecting nerves tend to lead to true muscle weakness. This is because if the nerve to a muscle fibre stops working, the muscle fibre can’t work either and it will become floppy and eventually shrivel.

Neurological conditions: muscle weakness can be caused by cerebrovascular disease such as stroke and brain haemorrhage and spinal injury. Tumours in the brain can also lead to muscle weakness. Muscles which become partially or completely paralysed lose their normal strength and will eventually waste. Some recovery is possible but it will be slow and may not be complete.

Spine-related conditions: when nerves are damaged as they emerge from the spine , weakness can result. When the discs slip out, they press on nerves headed lower down in the body. The weakness affects only the muscles served by the irritated or compressed nerve.

Other uncommon nerve conditions:Multiple sclerosis : this is caused by damage to nerves in the brain and spinal cord and can cause sudden paralysis. This can recover partially but does not always do so.

: this is a post-viral paralysing disease which causes weakness and loss of muscle function from the fingers and toes upwards. It may last many months, although complete recovery is usual.

  • Maintain a healthy weight: Talk to your healthcare provider about your ideal weight, and try to stay within that range.

Muscle Damage Through Injury

Extreme Muscle Weakness: Important Considerations

There are many ways in which your muscles can be directly damaged. The most obvious is injury or trauma such as sporting injuries, pulls and sprains. In any muscle injury, bleeding from damaged muscle fibres occurs inside the muscle, followed by swelling and inflammation. This makes the muscle less strong and also painful to use. Localised pain is the primary symptom but weakness also results.

Over-the-counter pain medication and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are effective for moderate and severe cases. However, some cases of osteoarthritis dont respond well to these medications, and doctors will usually advise patients to seek medical advice before having surgery. If osteoarthritis is not yet severe enough, doctors will often prescribe over-the-counter medication to help reduce pain. In the worst-case scenario, they may prescribe a special drug to alleviate the symptoms.

In the case of severe cases, a doctor may prescribe corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation in the affected joints. Repeated corticosteroids, however, can be damaging to cartilage. For severe cases, the doctor may prescribe joint replacement. This is a surgical procedure that replaces the damaged joint surfaces with artificial ones. It is often an expensive and lengthy procedure, but it will reduce the pain and improve the function of the joint.

As with other types of osteoarthritis, MIV-711 has the potential to reverse or slow down the progression of the disease. The drug has also shown promise in reducing the progression of osteoarthritis. In addition, MIV-711 has the potential to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis in the affected joints. This drug has been developed in a laboratory and is currently being tested on a clinical trial in patients with the condition.

Muscle Weakness Vs Muscle Fatigue

Thelastlaugh

I think for the benefit of people who are in the midst of diagnosis, it’s time to put out a discussion on what weakness really is. On the internet there are 2 kinds of weakness, true weakness and perceived weakness. You can have either one, but I believe that doesn’t discount the fact that weakness itself is present. Here comes the confusion. True weakness is defined by the inability to

perform basic functions such as lifting your hand etc. Perceived

weakness is the feeling you get when you find yourself unable to lift

your hand for a long period. Both are weaknesses. But the latter is due to fatigue .

It only gets more confusing. If you do have progressive muscle weakness, you’ll find yourself slowly unable to work those muscles, setting fatigue in very easily.

Discussion point is: How would one know if their muscles are fatigued due to weakness or are weak due to fatigue ? Is there a subtle difference between those 2? This will definitely help people to tell the doctor more specific details so that correct tests can be performed.

My Muscles Feel Sore Weak And Tired Should I See A Doctor

Everyone feels muscle pain, weakness and fatigue from time to time. But at what point should you see your doctor about it?

Ambrosia Scott, DPT, LAT, CCI, says patients should see a doctor if theyre concerned about muscle weakness and pain.

Ambrosia Scott, DPT, LAT, CCI is the outpatient rehabilitation manager for Regional One Health. She can help patients answer that question and provide insight on what can cause these common concerns.

Better yet, Scott can help patients get better through physical therapy.

If you have muscle pain or weakness, once you have an accurate diagnosis, therapy can help you gain strength and flexibility, Scott said.

Regional One Healths Center for Rehabilitative Medicine at the East Campus offers a full range of therapy services.

Patients can also transition to a Post-Rehab Wellness Program to protect the gains they achieve. Heres what you need to know:

    When should I seek help?

Scott recommends seeing a doctor if you have sudden-onset weakness, fatigue or pain and cant identify the reason. You really need to consult with a physician if youre doing fine one minute and then all of a sudden youre not, she said.

She described that as insidious onset. That means you start feeling unwell even though you didnt perform any physical activity that might have made you sore or tired.

Even if you can identify a cause, you still might need to see a doctor if you arent getting better.

Another red flag is if healthy changes dont bring relief.

    Care Advice For Normal Fatigue

  • What You Should Know About Normal Fatigue When Sick:
  • Children who are sick are often less active.
  • They become easily tired and need extra rest. They take extra naps and sleep longer hours for many days. As long as your child is alert when awake, extra sleeping is normal.
  • This is different than the normal fatigue from exercise. Examples are a soccer game, manual labor or a long hike. This type of fatigue does not last long. It responds to a good night’s sleep.
  • Sick children also are less hungry for meals but like to drink fluids. As long as they stay hydrated, this is normal.
  • Here is some care advice that should help.
  • Trust Your Child to Choose the Right Activity Level:
  • When they are awake, most sick kids want to watch TV. Some want to play with their toys. A few may want to play outside. That’s also fine.
  • If they are feeling badly, they may just want to rest. They may prefer to stay in bed or on the sofa for a day or two.
  • As long as they are alert and able to walk normally, this is normal.
  • Avoid Trying to Force Bed Rest When Awake:
  • Most children sleep extra hours when they are sick with any infection. Their body tells them how much sleep they need. Getting enough sleep helps them fight the infection. Let them choose the amount.
  • Trying to force extra bed rest is not helpful for common childhood illness.
  • It doesn’t reduce symptoms.
  • Weakness occurs
  • Fever lasts more than 3 days
  • Extra sleepiness lasts more than 1 week
  • Fatigue lasts more than 2 weeks
  • Your child becomes worse

    Conditions Of Muscle Inflammation

Inflammatory diseases of muscle typically affect older adults and include conditions such as polymyalgia rheumatica , polymyositis and dermatomyositis. Some of these conditions respond well to steroids . Unfortunately, as explained above, steroids also cause muscle wasting and weakness.

Conditions of generalised tissue inflammation such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis can cause muscle weakness. In a small proportion of cases of rheumatoid arthritis, muscle weakness and tiredness may be the only sign of the disease for some considerable time.

    Spinal Lesion Or Tumor

    How muscle stiffness causes weakness

A spinal lesion or tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue within or surround the spinal cord or column. Spinal tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous, and originate in the spine or spinal column or spread there from another site.

Back pain, which is worse at night or increases with activity, is the most common symptom. If the tumor presses on a nerve, it can cause numbness or weakness in the arms, legs, or chest.

Treatment depends on the type and location of the lesion or tumor, and whether or not its cancerous or noncancerous. Surgery to remove the tumor, or radiation therapy or chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, can usually resolve leg weakness.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is also known as Lou Gehrigs disease. Its a progressive neurological disease that damages nerve cells and often begins with muscle twitching and weakness in the legs.

    Other early symptoms include:

    • slurred speech
    • difficulty holding up your head

Theres currently no cure for ALS, but treatments are available that can help control symptoms and complications and improve quality of life.
