West Nile Virus Infection
West Nile virus is transmitted by being bitten by a mosquito infected with the virus. Its important to note that not all people bitten by these mosquitos will contract WNV.
Symptoms usually appear within 3 to 14 days after being infected and can include:
- sore throat
- diarrhea
- respiratory problems
Researchers are working a vaccine for SARS, but there is currently no confirmed treatment. There havent been any reported cases of SARS .
Talking To Others About Lupus
Others wont be able to see most of the symptoms caused by your lupus. When symptoms like pain, fatigue, depression, or joint stiffness make your regular tasks more difficult, its important to know how to talk to those around you.
It may help to start by explaining what lupus is not. Let people know that is not contagious, nor is it like cancer or HIV or AIDS. Then explain what lupus is. Let them know that it is chronic, which means you will have it forever, and that it affects each person differently.
Your conversations with others about lupus may change depending on who you are talking to.
Most People With Lupus Will Get Lupus Rash
Many people with lupus will have some form of a rash, says Roberto Caricchio, MD, the chief of rheumatology at Temple University Hospital and the director of the Temple Lupus Program in Philadelphia. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, as many as two-thirds of people with lupus experience a skin rash, and estimates suggest that between 40 and 70 percent of people with lupus will notice that their symptoms get worse in the sun or some types of artificial light.
One main type of lupus, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, is limited to skin symptoms, including a rash and lesions. That means people with cutaneous lupus, which does not progress and become systemic lupus erythematosus, only experience skin symptoms. People with cutaneous lupus most commonly develop a discoid rash. It appears as round, raised, red patches and can cause scarring, Dr. Caricchio explains. Its often confined to small areas above the neck, such as the ears and scalp, he says. The rash usually does not itch or cause discomfort.
Another subtype of cutaneous lupus is subacute cutaneous lupus, and people with it will develop thick, scaly, red lesions that usually do not scar and do not itch.
It gets confusing because some people with both of these forms of cutaneous lupus will only experience skin symptoms, while for others, lupus will progress to become systemic lupus, meaning it will affect other parts of the body, too.

Strep Throat And Scarlet Fever
Strep throat is caused by the group A Streptococcus bacteria. The condition starts with a sore throat. Other symptoms of strep throat include:
- white patches in the throat
- swollen glands
- difficulty swallowing
Some people may also have stomach pain, headaches, or a fever.
Your doctor can diagnose strep throat after a rapid strep test or throat culture. Treatment involves a course of antibiotics.
If you have strep throat, youre at risk for developing scarlet fever, which is due to a bacterial toxin. A sign of scarlet fever is a telltale bright red rash over your body, which typically feels like sandpaper and may peel.
Some people who have scarlet fever also have a strawberry tongue, which appears red and bumpy.
Seek treatment if you suspect scarlet fever. If left untreated, the bacteria can spread to other parts of the body including the kidneys, blood, and lungs. Rheumatic fever is a complication of scarlet fever and can affect your heart, joints, and nervous system.
Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to treat scarlet fever.

Treatments For Mouth And Throat Symptoms
If you have a dry mouth, you should try to see a dentist every three to six months, so they can monitor and treat your symptoms.
You may find that artificial saliva, lozenges, sugar-free gum or gels help your mouth feel less dry. Sprays are also good, but some are acidic and can increase tooth decay, so make sure you use ones containing fluoride.
Antifungal treatments can also help if your mouth is very dry and this is causing other problems, such as fungal infections and dry coughs. Mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine may help with your dental hygiene, but you should only use them for short periods of time every so often, as they could stain your teeth.
You can also get toothpastes or mousses containing fluoride, which can help reduce decay. Try to use alcohol-free products, as products containing alcohol can dry your mouth out.
You should be able to get most of the products above from a chemist or supermarket.
If your salivary glands are making the sides of your face painful, talk to your doctor, as you may have an infection. If its not an infection, you may be prescribed a short course of a steroid called prednisolone, or given a steroid injection to reduce the inflammation.

What Causes A Rash And Sore Swollen Throat
A rash and sore throat can be inflammatory responses. Your body releases chemicals called histamines when youre exposed to an allergen. While this is meant to be a protective mechanism, histamines can cause a skin rash and a swollen throat.
Sometimes, a rash and swollen throat along with difficulty breathing may indicate a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is usually a result of exposure to something known to cause allergic reactions, such as a bee sting or certain foods.
If you believe you or someone around you is experiencing anaphylaxis, call 911 immediately.
Viral and bacterial infections also can cause a rash and sore throat. These can include the following:
Sex Fertility And Pregnancy
Women with Sjögrens syndrome can sometimes have a dry vagina, which can make sex painful. Lubricants and creams made from the female sex hormone, oestrogen, can help with this. Treatments for infections such as thrush are available from chemists.
The condition doesnt affect fertility in men or women. However, there may be a higher risk of miscarriage in women who have anti-Ro or anti-La antibodies. Your doctor might suggest low-dose aspirin in the early stages of pregnancy to reduce this risk.
There arent usually any problems during or after pregnancy, and you may be able to carry on with some treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine, during pregnancy.
However, a very small number of women may pass anti-Ro or anti-La antibodies on to their baby during pregnancy. The baby could then develop symptoms, such as rashes and abnormal blood tests after birth.
These will clear up once the mothers antibodies have been lost from the babys blood. This can take anything from a couple of weeks to a few months.
In some cases, the antibodies affect the babys heart, causing it to beat slowly. If you have these antibodies, you should tell your obstetrician, as your babys heartbeat will need additional monitoring in the womb.

You cannot avoid lupus since the cause of it is unknown. However, you may be able to help prevent flares. Common triggers include:

Distribution And Outbreaks Of Chikungunya
Chikungunya virus was first identified in Tanzania in 1952 and for the following ~50 years was isolated and caused occasional outbreaks in Africa and Asia. Since 2004, chikungunya has spread rapidly and been identified in over 60 countries throughout Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Starting in 2004, an outbreak in Kenya spread to surrounding locations in the Indian Ocean. In the two years following, around 500 000 cases were reported on La Reunion Island, more than 1/3 of the population became infected. The epidemic then spread from the Indian Ocean to India, where it persisted for a number of years, infecting almost 1.5 million people. Viremic travellers saw the virus spread to Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand.
In 2007, local transmission was reported for the first time in Europe, in a localized outbreak in north-eastern Italy where 197 cases recorded. This outbreak confirmed that mosquito-borne outbreaks vectored by Ae. Albopictus are plausible in Europe. 2010 saw the virus continue to cause illness in South East Asia, and another outbreak was observed in La Reunion, in the Indian Ocean. Viremic travellers again imported the virus into Europe, as well as the USA and Taiwan.
In 2017, ECDC reported a total of 10 countries, with 548 cases with chikungunya, of which 84% were confirmed cases. Italy bore more than 50% of the chikungunya burden. Autochthonous cases were again reported in Europe for the first time since 2014.

Hand Foot And Mouth Disease
Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a highly contagious disease caused by coxsackievirus. Its spread by coming into contact with surfaces contaminated by feces or through contact with the saliva, respiratory secretions, or stool of a person infected with hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Young children are at the highest risk of getting this infection. Symptoms, including sore throat, usually clear up within 10 days.
Pityriasis Rosea In Pregnancy
Pregnant women are more susceptible to pityriasis rosea because of their altered immune response.3 One case series of 61 pregnant women with pityriasis rosea found a 13% overall rate of spontaneous abortion.
