How To Handle An Osha Inspection

Since the inception of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration , workplace injuries and deaths have dropped over 60 percent. OSHA provides an invaluable service to employees across the nation, but the rules and regulations set forth by the inspection agency are complex. And, an audit can be startling.

Keeping OSHA laws and the broader concept of employee safety in mind will not only limit the penalties you, as a business owner, may incur, but can make an OSHA visit a substantially less uneasy process.

OSHA laws exist to keep workplaces safe. As long as business owners and facility managers uphold the regulations, fines are unlikely. When you receive an OSHA citation, you can address potentially dangerous situations before an accident happens. But, when you ignore a threatening setting without recourse, you could find yourself and your business in hot water with facility managements favorite, albeit scary, big brother.

What Mats Are Right For Your Kitchen

Ergonomically designed AbsorbentsOnline anti-fatigue floor mats and anti-fatigue kitchen mats are the perfect choices for those with commercial kitchens who employ workers in any positions that require standing for extended amounts of time. How Do I Select An Anti

There are many types of mats that are sold as anti-fatigue mats. When choosing a mat, consider the following:

  • Know the purpose of the mat. Anti-slip or other mats are not the same as anti-fatigue mats. Choose a mat that matches your needs best.
  • The thickness of the mat. Softer and thicker may not always be better. Choose a mat that provides some elasticity, but at the same time is not so soft that a person feels they cannot stand comfortably.
  • Know the environment the mat will be used in.
  • Mats should not slip, or create a trip hazard.
  • Mats should have sloped edges
  • Mats may need to be cleaned. In some areas, such as food preparation, being able to adequately clean the mats will be important.

How Managers Can Help Maintain A Safe Working Environment

Reflect on the prevailing work environment and assess it for possible contributors or indicators of fatigue. Is the team understaffed? Consider the workload balance and ask yourself if your team is forced to work at a frenetic pace without pausing to take frequent, short breaks.

Look at the pattern of worker absences, both planned and unplanned. If people are taking a lot of time off sick, it could indicate that youre working them too hard. If your team is forced to absorb the workload of absentee members, it may increase the risk of their becoming fatigued.

What can you do to minimize the risk of worker fatigue? Experts recommend:

  • Arrange schedules that allow frequent rest breaks and nighttime sleep.
  • Manipulate the work environment to increase alertness by adjusting things like lighting, temperature, and making sure workstations are ergonomically designed. For example, if your radio operator has to spend a lot of time sitting in an airless, confined space, you can make sure they have a comfortable seat that promotes good posture, the area is well ventilated, and that they get regular opportunities to see daylight and catch a breath of fresh air.
  • Educate your workers in the hazards of fatigue while they are at work. Teach them to recognize the symptoms and how fatigue can affect their health and relationships.
  • Implement a Fatigue Management Plan.

Osha Fatigue Policy: What Do I Need To Know About Osha Regulations

Fatigue in the workplace can lead to accidents, injuries, and loss of life. The term in this context refers to reversible physiological reduction in muscle activity and cognitive function, as opposed to news fatigue or being tired of supporting a chronically losing sports team. It can be the result of insufficient sleep, prolonged physical or mental activity, and/or disruption of our natural Circadian rhythms because of irregular shift work patterns.

Fatigue contributed to the tragic explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986 that occurred 73 seconds after launch, taking the lives of all seven crew members, among them one civilian. In addition to technical failure, the Presidential Commissions report revealed that there was poor judgement on the timing of the launch and that key managerial staff involved in the launch had been performing on less than two hours sleep the night before.

Other high profile calamities that were subsequently linked to human fatigue are the Chernobyl disaster, also in 1986 the near-catastrophic launch of the space shuttle Columbia, only days before the Challenger tragedy, and Londons Clapham Junction railway crash in 1988.

New Study Confirms Benefits Of Anti

Two professors at Loughborough University, George Havenith and Lucy Dorman, conducted a study of anti-fatigue mats in a special laboratory created for the test. They published the results earlier this summer.

The study involved 14 participants who were instructed to arrive at the laboratory for the tests at the same time each day. They were asked to stand on a concrete floor or on anti-fatigue mats for 90-minute sessions over a 5-day period.

The researchers used a variety of methods to measure any pain, discomfort, tiredness and fatigue that might develop after standing for prolonged periods these included infrared thermal imaging, body temperature sensors placed on the participants, and infrared photographs. Participants also filled out a questionnaire after each session.

This is similar to other research conducted on this subject, says JoAnne Boston, business development manager for Crown Mats.

After evaluating the results, the researchers found that standing for the 90-minute periods caused serious discomfort to the feet, legs and back of the study participants. The researchers also found it caused stiffness to the neck and shoulders.

Other studies have gone a step further and found that standing for periods longer than 90 minutes can result in even more serious conditions such as circulatory problems that can, in some cases, be irreversible, adds Boston.

The Human Cost Of Standing In The Workplace

Standing for longer periods causes more than simple discomfortit has measurable health impacts. A study published in Rehabilitation Nursing reported that prolonged standing at work can lead to lower back and leg pain, cardiovascular problems, fatigue, discomfort and pregnancy-related health outcomes. Back pain was the most commonly reported issue, followed by neck and shoulder pain.

Similarly, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety says working in a standing position can cause sore feet, leg swelling, varicose veins, muscle fatigue, low back pain, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, and other health problems.

Keeping the body in an upright position requires considerable muscular effort, CCOHS says. Standing effectively reduces the blood supply to the loaded muscles. Insufficient blood flow accelerates the onset of fatigue and causes pain in the muscles of the legs, back and neck .

Accordingly, OSHA sets and enforces safety standards while also providing employers and employees with outreach, assistance, education, and training.

Since OSHAs inception in 1971, workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths have decreased significantly. The Act covers almost all private sector employees and most public sector employees who arent already protected by government worker safety programs.

Fatigue Management at the Workplace

ESD mats protect sensitive equipment by drawing static electricity off workers before they touch susceptible chemicals or apparatus. Humans quickly generate static electricity through friction caused by walking or using chairs with casters. With a simple touch, this static electricity is passed from the person to sensitive electronics. One such shock can destroy internal microchips or cause a spark that can ignite flammable chemicals. However, if the person steps on a ESD mat, the static is safely transferred from the person to the ground.

Most commonly called Switchboard Matting, non-conductive mats insulate and protect workers from deadly shocks generated by high voltage equipment. These mats will not allow the electricity to conduct through the worker, and hence protects workers from serious injury.

Are Anti Fatigue Mats Required By Law

Plenty of reasons contribute to the fact that why you should be using anti-fatigue mats! As the name already makes a click, anti-fatigue mats are obviously used for reducing the human-associated fatigue effects but, they have other major benefits too.

Particularly in California, anti-fatigue mats were introduced to prevent dirt from entering into a cleaner place. Later on it was found out that these mats can also be used at workplaces to give relief from tiredness and exhaustion and hence to increase productivity.

All these benefits of anti-fatigue mats justify their use to a greater extent.

However, many of our employee wonders are anti-fatigue mats required by law too?

Well, up till today, no such law has been implemented that imposes the use of anti-fatigue mats at workplaces. But yeah, employees and employers did not even found out a ban on the use of these mats at office places.

    Dear Mr. Brothers:

This is in response to your letter of February 16, regarding the extent to which Safety mats provide for compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations for machine guarding.

Comprehensive machine guarding is provided through a system of components and integrated with effective employee training and supervision. OSHA’s regulations predominately address the requirements for physical guarding. However, it is recognized that even the most comprehensive guarding concepts provide incomplete employee protection unless adequate training and supervision exist.
