Complementary And Alternative Medicine

CFS/ME patients tend to use more alternative medicine treatments than people without . Patients often leave orthodox medical care because they feel that their condition has been unjustifiably attributed to psychological causes: they are given the message that it is all in the mind. In a twin study, 91% of twins with CFS/ME and 71% without CFS/ME used at least one alternative treatment. A large proportion of the study participants stated that alternative treatments were helpful .

Activate Your Lifestyle Again

The human body is designed to move, and if it sits too long, everything stagnates. Staying in motion increases blood flow, which washes out toxins, stimulates healing, and increases oxygen delivery to tissues. It also stimulates endorphins, the natural feel-good chemicals that reduce pain and stimulate immune functions, as well as stem cells, which are necessary to repair damaged tissues.

That said, experts warn that if you have chronic fatigue and overdo it, theres a risk of setback and post-exertional malaise , which is a worsening of symptoms such as fatigue, sleeplessness, cognitive issues, pain, dizziness, and more. So keep in mind that becoming active again must be a delicate balance between moving enough to gain benefit, but not so much that it aggravates inflamed tissues and causes further damage. No test is currently available that can identify fatigue syndrome?ocid=feed-health-article” target=”_blank”> chronic fatigue syndrome . The diagnosis is guided by criteria established in 2015 that include common features of the condition and exclusion of other explanations for the findings. The criteria require these 3 symptoms: New onset of fatigue that is not improved with rest causing a marked decrease in ability to perform normal activities for at least 6 months without clear explanation Fatigue that is made worse by physical exertion or cognitive stress that previously did not cause problems. Feeling unrested despite adequate sleep In addition, at least one of the following two symptoms are required: Problems with brain function that is made worse by stress or exertion Worsened symptoms when upright and improved by lying down or elevating the feet Routine tests are recommended to rule out other common explanations for these symptoms. Such tests include: Blood counts Standard chemistry tests Testing of thyroid function Other testing based on symptoms For example, if muscle pain or weakness are present, muscle enzyme tests should be checked.

Eat A Wholesome Balanced Diet

A healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains has been shown to help with myriad diseases, including CFS. In fact, one January 2019 review in âBiomedicine & Pharmacotherapyâ showed that people with ME/CFS were more likely to have deficiencies of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids.

Donna Casey, MD, internist at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, recommends filling your plate with the following to make sure you’re getting your fair share of the right nutrients in your diet:

  • Fruits and vegetables of all different colors
  • Healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts and nut butter, olives and olive oil
  • Wholesome carbohydrates, like legumes, oats, brown rice, quinoa and barley
  • Lean proteins, including fish, poultry and low-fat dairy

Ayurvedic Outlook Of Cfs

Coping With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia

Chronic fatigue syndrome is also known as Mansa Dhatugat and Mansavrut Vataor Balakshayain Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda, the imbalance of any three energies results in health complications. The main reason of chronic fatigue is aggravation of vatadosha that generates negativity at physical and mental levels. It affects nervous system that causes weakness of nervous system and it may create hypersensitivity that results in pain and tenderness. It may leads to mental disorders like cognitive disorders and disturbances in sleep. It may be due to accumulation of ama that results in disconnection of mind, body and spirit.

Josie was also encouraged to begin a regular meditation practice and to harness thoughts of gratitude, compassion, and peace, and to picture herself in a healthy state six months from that time. These types of visualizations and emotions are necessary on a daily basis in order for our bodies to heal.

When we spend much of our time with negative thinking and anxiety, our bodies perceive that we are in survival mode. If we live in a chronic state of survival, then our brains will be surrounded by high levels of cortisol and adrenaline which can eventually cause the size of our hippocampus to decrease and can even shrink our muscles. These effects contribute to feelings of fatigue. Meditation on a regular basis switches the brain from survival into healing and resting mode and will counteract these effects.

Scientists Discover Robust Evidence That Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Is A Biological Illness

Researchers at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia Universitys Mailman School of Public Health identified distinct immune changes in patients diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, known medically as myalgic encephalomyelitis or systemic exertion intolerance disease. The findings could help improve diagnosis and identify treatment options for the disabling disorder, in which symptoms range from extreme fatigue and difficulty concentrating to headaches and muscle pain.

These immune signatures represent the first robust physical evidence that ME/CFS is a biological illness as opposed to a psychological disorder, and the first evidence that the disease has distinct stages. Results appear online in the new American Association for the Advancement of Science journal, Science Advances.

Concluding Remarks And Future Directions

This review suggests that the beneficial effects of nutritional supplements are not random, but that their action is due to the removal of one of the causes of the CFS/ME. There is evidence that supplements may benefit CFS/ME patients therefore, nutritional supplements should be recommended, at least in CFS/ME patients with a biochemically proven deficiency. Studies investigating nutritional interventions in CFS/ME remain very limited most studies have had small sample sizes, and lacked long term followup . Despite the relative consistency in case definition, the studies differed with regard to inclusion and exclusion criteria and reporting participants’ sociodemographic characteristics and clinical features . This heterogeneity in study design makes the application of the findings to the clinical setting more difficult. Therefore, longerterm RCTs in homogeneous populations that use more specific case criteria are now warranted.

In agreement with several previous studies, pacing was consistently shown to be the most helpful treatment, CBT was useful for some patients but not all for all graded training may cause the condition to worsen. However, the results must be interpreted with care, as the participants are not a representative sample.

Alternative Or Complementary Medicine

Since there is no standard treatment for CFS/ME, people often consider alternatives to traditional medicine or use non-traditional treatments to complement their other medications. Commonly used alternative and complementary treatments include:

  • Mind-body treatments, like qigong, tai chi, and meditation
  • Trigger point therapy, called myofascial release
  • Chiropractic treatments

Complementary therapies have received mixed results when scientifically studied. Before beginning an alternative or complementary treatment, talk with your doctor to ensure that you arent trying something potentially dangerous.

What Is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome is a complex and disabling disease. It has been classified as a neurological disorder by the World Health Organization, though it affects many parts of the body, including the brain and muscles, digestive, immune and cardiac systems.

The term myalgic encephalomyelitis means pain in the muscles, and inflammation in the brain and spinal cord. Scientists are starting to understand some of the biological changes in the bodies of people with ME/CFS, although they have not yet found how to prevent, or cure it.

Research has found that ME/CFS is associated with problems involving:

  • The bodys ability to produce energy at a cellular level
  • Immune, neurological and hormonal systems
  • Blood pressure and heart rate regulation
  • Cognition how quickly information is processed

ME/CFS affects men, women and children of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. 75-80% of people with the disease are female. It is estimated that up to 600,000 Victorians may be living with ME/CFS, and as many as 90% are undiagnosed.

What Is The Prognosis

The clinical course of CFS varies considerably among persons who have the disorder. The actual percentage of patients who recover is unknown, and even the definition of what should be considered recovery is subject to debate. Some patients recover to the point where they can resume work and other activities, but continue to experience various or periodic CFS symptoms. Some patients recover completely with time, and some grow progressively worse. CFS follows a cyclical course, alternating between periods of illness and relative well being.

Diagnostic Criteria For Me/cfs Using The National Academy Of Medicine Clinical Criteria

How to overcome chronic fatigue syndrome FOREVER: #1 Tip to stop chronic fatigue forever

For a diagnosis of ME/CFS, the person must have the following three symptoms:

  • Substantial reduction in functioning and persistent and profound fatigue for at least 6 months. The person is unable to undertake the same level of activity before they became ill. Their fatigue is not the result of significant exertion and is not substantially alleviated by rest.
  • Post-exertional malaise.
  • Diagnosis also requires at least one of the following two symptoms:

  • Cognitive impairment .
  • Orthostatic intolerance .
  • It is important to note that these are not the only symptoms of ME/CFS, just the minimum needed to meet the diagnostic criteria.

While diagnosis requires that a person has had symptoms continually for six months, early intervention with pacing and rest can help reduce symptoms, improve quality of life and reduce the risk of exacerbating the disease. Research suggests that patients who are able to pace their activity and not push themselves tend to do better in the long term. Pacing and rest can start even prior to an official diagnosis.

While there is currently no cure and no evidence-based treatments, it is important to find a doctor who is not only sympathetic to ME/CFS, but can work with you to help manage your symptoms.

    What Else Could It Be

Many people who have ME/CFS have other conditions, too. If you get treated for those, it might also improve your chronic fatigue.

ME/CFS can look a lot like âmonoâ , Lyme disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, sleep disorders, or depression. It affects about 2.5 million Americans, but experts believe only about 20% are diagnosed.

Get 7 9 Hours Of Sleep Nightly

The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Some questions you can ask yourself to see if you are not sleeping enough include: Does it take me a long time to fall asleep? Do I wake up often or am I restless? Do I feel sleepy when driving? Do I need caffeine to get through the day? Answer, yes, to any of these indicates you may not be getting enough quality sleep.

    How Is Me/cfs Diagnosed

5 Steps to Eliminating Chronic Fatigue Naturally & Holistically

Because many symptoms of ME/CFS are also symptoms of other illnesses or side effects of medicine, your doctor will need to do physical exams and tests to help determine if you have ME/CFS. There are no standard lab tests to diagnose ME/CFS.

If you think you may have ME/CFS, see your doctor. Your doctor may:

    • Ask you about your physical and mental health.
    • Do a physical exam.
    • Order lab tests based on your symptoms, such as urine and blood tests, which will tell your doctor if something other than ME/CFS might be causing your symptoms.
    • Order tests that check for problems found in people with ME/CFS.
    • Classify you as having ME/CFS if:
    • You have the main symptoms of ME/CFS, including extreme fatigue or exhaustion that does not go away and that prevents you from doing the things you want and need to do for you and your family exhaustion that comes after mental or physical exercise sleep problems and pain AND
    • You have had the extreme fatigue and other symptoms for 6 months or longer AND
    • You and your doctor cannot find another explanation for your symptoms.

The process to make a final diagnosis of ME/CFS can take a long time, so try to be patient. It is usually best to develop a relationship and follow up often with one doctor so that he or she can get to know you and see how you respond to treatment over time.
