Gastric Bypass Surgery Heres 5 Reasons Why You Feel Tired Or Weak

Dumping Syndrome | Gastric Sleeve Surgery | Questions and Answers

As with any medical procedure, bariatric surgery can come with some unpleasant or uncomfortable side effects following the procedure. Some bariatric patients may feel tired or weak after surgery. While this may be common, it is not normal and should be addressed.

Here are five common reasons you may be feeling tired or weak after gastric bypass surgery.

Comparing One’s Old Life With The New Life

The old and new life was compared in different ways. Whereas Charlene’s situation improved significantly when she was reoperated on, the other women were still feeling disabled in their daily lives, struggling with various problems. They all emphasized that their life situation had become restricted and had changed for the worse compared to their lives before the surgery. As Jane explains it:

If I were to compare my life-situation today with my life situation before the surgery, it was super. It had to do with I was hoping that my life would improve for the better. I thought everything would be easier when I lost weight. Easier to walk up stairs, easier to play with my children, things would be easier. Instead, I feel more or less disabled. Everything has become a hassle, sort of, because my quality of life is worse now than previously. For example, walking to my job is not possible anymore. I do not have the energy to do that. I have enough energy to be with my children. I have enough energy to manage doing my job. And after that I have no energy left. I am working. I probably should not be working, but I got a different type of work position just before Christmas, and I think maybe that is what is saving me.

Your Blood Pressure Is Low

After weight loss surgery, your body may not require the same dosage of blood pressure medications to control your previously high blood pressure. If you were on blood pressure meds prior to surgery and those have not been adjusted, talk to your primary care physician, as some blood pressure meds can cause lethargy and fatigue.

Wait We Actually Have One More Thing To Talk About

Have you had your labs checked lately?

Every bariatric surgeon is a little different on when and how often then want labs checked. Many patients are quick to think low energy is vitamin related when it is not.

However, its important to have your levels check if you had surgery more than a year ago and havent had your labs checked in a long time.

Vitamin deficiencies can be slow to come around. In fact, sometimes lab values in a normal range feels like permission to miss some vitamins here or there.

You may want to see my blog post covering What Vitamins a Post-Op Really Needs for a review on what vitamins are recommended and for how long after surgery.

Low levels of iron, Vitamin D, B12, thiamine or others can be the reason for fatigue. In my experience, patients are run down more because of water than vitamins but it shouldnt be ruled out especially the further you get from surgery.

There are plenty of other reasons fatigue can plague you after surgery.

For the same reasons it can before surgery! Look back at what other factors may be dragging you down. Stress? Work? Snoring spouse?

Youre Not Getting Enough Protein

Roux

The amount of protein you consume has a direct effect on your energy levels. Following gastric bypass surgery or any other bariatric procedure, you should be eating at least 80 grams of protein per day unless otherwise directed by your surgeon. Immediately after surgery, your protein intake will come from protein shakes and supplements, but as you progress through the post-op diet stages, you will be able to gradually increase your food sources of protein, including fish, chicken and lean meats. Follow your doctors guidelines for your post-op diet, and if you struggle to eat enough protein during a day, adding in a protein shake can help you keep up with necessary protein intake.

The #1 Most Common Reason For Low Energy After Surgery Is

Youre low on water.

Even a mild dehydration can make you feel super sluggish.

If you feel like you might be behind on water or if youve wondered if being low on water can slow down your weight loss, youll want to watch this video on Mild vs Severe Dehydration.

We mostly think of dehydration as the time to go get IV fluids, which can happen, but mild dehydration may not be severe enough to need fluidsyet.

Post-op weight loss surgery patients ARE more prone to dehydration and not only is it best for your progress to get in 64 to 96 ounces of water, its also important to keep you from getting to the point of needing fluids.

BUT! If you feel like youre doing fine on your fluids, lets move on to some other options.

Chanelle Hayes Diagnosed With Me After 9 Stone Weight Loss Through Gastric Sleeve Op

Big Brother star Chanelle Hayes, 34, has said that her condition went undiagnosed for years due to her obesity

  • 18:38, 27 Dec 2021

Chanelle Hayes has revealed that she has been diagnosed with M.E after losing nine stone.

The Big Brother star, 34, has said that her condition went undiagnosed for years due to her obesity.

Following her gastric sleeve operation, Chanelle said that she was in the best shape of her life and that it helped curb her “addiction” to binge-eating.

However, Chanelle has said that she has been left in agony and feeling that her “bones are going to explode” as she suffers from the chronic fatigue syndrome.

As a result of her bad health, Chanelle has had to give up drinking alcohol and going to the gym due to her extreme exhaustion.

She told The Sun : “I always put my symptoms down to being so obese.

“I thought ‘I’m overweight, it’s my own fault, no wonder I’m tired all of the time and no wonder my joints are killing me.’

“Then as I started to lose weight I felt like the pain was getting worse and worse.”

Chanelle continued to explain that it was a “hidden disability” and that people think you’re just lazy.

But she said that there are some days she sleeps for 14 hours and that she still doesn’t have enough energy when she wakes up to brush her teeth or do her hair.

Sometimes, she said that her condition can get so bad that she is confined to her bed for four days and fears that she is missing out on lots of time with her children.

Healthy But Worried About Their Situation

Prior to the surgery, the women emphasized their lifestyle as being actively involved in various activities such as working outside the home, taking care of children, engaging in social relations, volunteering at the school, and taking part in children’s activities. Their healthy and active life included exercise and few signs of illness. As Kirsten expressed her commitment to exercise at the local gym It was fun. I was completely hooked. The women described their life as similar to a normal life.

It restricted me in my social life. I was not fond of going out with friends. It prevented me from going to discos or public dance places. It did not stand to do so. I felt like people were staring at me. I am actually very fond of dancing. But people would stare at me and they would make comments, especially as the evening went on. You are the ugliest person I’ve ever seen or well, yes, that kind of thing. That was the level of conversation. Men were the worst. That’s the way I felt. Uh. And the people I was with said You have to learn how to answer back.Of course, and so I had my answers ready and was prepared to say this or that. But when you I wasn’t able to respond to them I simply became sad. But many times I became annoyed. Why can’t I sit here in peace and without your bothering?

Primarily Restrictive Procedures With Some Malabsorption

Gastric Bypass vs Sleeve, update for 2021

Gastric bypass procedures produce weight loss primarily by gastric restriction, combined with an element of malabsorption. A small gastric pouch is created at the upper normal stomach. This small pouch results in a significant reduction in the amount of food a patient can consume in one sitting. Then ingested food bypasses the rest of the stomach, the entire duodenum , and a short segment of jejunum . This bypass results in mild fat and protein malabsorption due to a slight delay in mixing of food with bile and pancreatic enzymes.

One impact on digestion affected by this type of surgery is reduction in the absorption of calcium, iron, and B-complex vitamins. Another change is with ingestion of foods rich in carbohydrates or fats which may produce an unpleasant combination of side effects known as dumping syndrome. Due to the nature of this transient condition, patients quickly learn to avoid the foods associated with this condition.

Vitamin B-12 is very poorly absorbed when swallowed as a pill. Therefore, it must be taken in a very high daily dosage if taken in this form. There are other alternative forms for B-12 administration which includes monthly intramuscular injection, sublingual liquids or sprays, or nasal spray which more adequately enable absorption.

Primarily Malabsorptive Procedures With Some Restriction

This group of procedures produces weight loss primarily through malabsorption. There is a minor restrictive effect because of some reduction in the size of the patients stomach, but relative to the malabsorption effect this is minimal.

There are two mechanisms by which the malabsorption effect is created. First, the food stream is rerouted so that approximately 60% of the small intestine is bypassed. This means that food is in contact with the absorptive surface of the intestine for less time, thereby leaving less opportunity for the nutrients to be extracted in by the body. Second, by virtue of this food rerouting, there is less mixing with bile and pancreatic enzymes. Contact with bile is necessary for absorption of fat, and pancreatic enzymes are necessary to break down proteins, fats and complex carbohydrates for absorption. The mixing of bile and pancreatic enzymes with food after this type of surgery occurs in only 10% of the most distal small intestine. Therefore, only a small amount of protein and fat are efficiently absorbed.

Frequent loose stools can potentially be a side-effect of malabsorpitive procedures. Since this can increase the risk of dehydration, it is critical that patients drink at least 8 eight ounce glasses of water per day .

Before making changes in diet, vitamins and medications, be sure to consult your physician.

Unexpected Pain And Loss Of Energy

But it’s not a kind of ouch pain, as if I need crutches or something. It’s more like a general aching in my body all the time. So it’s part of an overall condition. I have underlying chronic pain a kind of grumbling, basic pain. And sometimes it is more painful for example to get out of bed in the morning. I have to set the alarm a little earlier. On occasion I wake up at night and can’t turn over in bed. Uh yes, and it hurts there right now, too I have I have pain actually in my entire body. It moves around, sort of it’s a little hopeless a little if I make an appointment because my hip is hurting so badly that I can’t walk, then I have to cancel.

As a contrast to Mary’s experiences, Charlene described how her pain problems started as an acute pain immediately after the surgery. During the first year, the pain was episodic, mainly in conjunction with eating. However, gradually the pain became more intense, metaphorically described as a knife being twisted around in her stomach-area. The women described their complaints as completely unpredictable and surprising while at the same time limiting their lives in several ways. Those who previously used to exercise on a regular basis experienced that they barely had the energy to walk to the bus nearby. Long walks and other forms of physical activity would intensify the pain and fatigue. And lying down and feeling completely exhausted became a common experience. As Jane expressed it:

Nutritional Supplements For Fatigue After Bariatric Surgery

There are a number of macro and micronutrients that increase energy. The focus of this article will be on three supplements that Ive used to combat fatigue after bariatric surgery: vitamin B12, vitamin D3, and ribose. I discuss the use of supplemental iron in the article, Prevent Iron Deficiency after Gastric Bypass.

which formulation of Vitamin B12 sublingual, intranasal, intramuscular best treats Fatigue after Bariatric Surgery?

Vitamin B12 is one of the more common deficiencies that present following bariatric surgery. It is estimated that 9% to 14% of this patient population has vitamin B12 deficiency going into surgery, and the condition is exacerbated by malabsorption following the procedure. Oral vitamin B12 is therefore not efficacious in patients who have undergone bariatric surgery with a malabsorption component. Sublingual , intranasal spray, or intramuscular injection are the recommended routes of administration. The University of Washington Medical Center recommends 1000 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily for those who have had bariatric surgery.

Reported online in the journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, before objective efficacy data on high-dose oral vitamin B12, intranasal, or sublingual formulations become available, the intramuscular formulation should remain the preferred route of B12 supplementation in patients undergoing RYGB .

How Gastric Sleeve Surgery Works

Fibromyalgia awareness day May 12th, wear purple and tell everyone you ...

Gastric sleeve surgery involves the removal of a portion of your stomach to decrease its size. The part that remains is what Dr. Reilly crafts into a small pouch, known as a sleeve.

The new sleeve is sized similarly to a banana. The smaller stomach pouch means you must limit what you eat and will feel fuller sooner after eating. The procedure helps reduce your urges to overeat and also changes the hormones that stimulate your appetite.

As youre eating less and making better food choices following gastric sleeve surgery, you can expect to lose significant amounts of weight in a relatively short period of time.

Kynurenine Production Insufficiency In Me/cfs Patients

One of the newer research topics about the etiology of ME/CFS patients is an abnormal metabolism of tryptophan to kynurenine including its catalyst indoleamine-2, 3-dioxygenase expressed in antigen-presenting cells . The precise measurement of tryptophan and its metabolites is an interesting approach for potential biomarkers and therapies in current general research . Physiologically, the essential amino acid tryptophan is metabolized approximately 5% to serotonin and melatonin, and degraded approximately 95% by the enzyme IDO to kynurenine . IDO and the kynurenine pathway play important roles in the immune system as immunoregulators and immunosuppressors . IDO is induced by infection and inflammation through pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators, mainly by IFN-y, but also IFN-, TNF- and LPS . Elevated IDO expressions seem to be an important hallmark of chronic viral infections such as HIV, hepatitis B and C by building an immune tolerant environment. Although elevated levels of IDO seem to correlate with the severity of diseases, the relevance of these findings remains unestablished . IDO activates regulatory T-cells and suppresses effector T-cell proliferation and function by the degradation of tryptophan to kynurenine , which enhances immunologic tolerance towards chronic infections.

My Struggle With Chronic Fatigue After Bariatric Surgery

Finding the cause of my fatigue after bariatric surgery is a regular event for me. Ive been twice diagnosed with iron deficiency. And I once battled iron deficiency anemia. The resulting fatigue took many months from which to recover using oral iron supplements and close to a year for my blood work to return to normal. A word to the wise, if you are diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, seek iron infusions. A friend of mine felt fine after just three infusions when she had iron deficiency anemia after her duodenal switch. My supplement of choice for maintaining iron levels is Trace Minerals Research Liquimins Ionic Iron.

I also experienced a dramatic depletion of energy after my StomaphyX surgery. After a period of exploration to discover what the cause of the fatigue might be, I was directed by a bariatric surgeon to begin taking sublingual vitamin B12.

On another occasion my Endocrinologist found that I was Vitamin D deficient and directed me to begin supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency is common after bariatric surgery. Reports have identified the deficiency to be as high as 84% in bariatric patients.
