Other Conditions That Cause Back Pain In Older Adults

We often see a range of less serious but still painful spine conditions in seniors. Most patients with these conditions will not require surgery. Physical therapy, medication, injectable anesthetics, or a combination of treatments usually can control symptoms.

  • Degenerative disc disease, which can cause whole spine pain, and lumbar arthritis, which usually causes low-back pain, commonly develop with age and are considered wear-and-tear conditions.
  • Sacroiliitis is an inflammation of the joints that connect your spine and pelvis. This condition can cause pain in the low back, glutes, and upper legs.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis that causes patients spines to become inflexible, resulting in a continual hunched forward position and spine pain.
  • We also check for adult degenerative scoliosis and kyphosis, spine-curving conditions that can result in back pain and weakness in the lower extremities.

What Is Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal Fatigue is exactly what it sounds like. Its when the Adrenal glands are so overloaded with stress that they dont operate correctly. Medically, as of today, its just a collection of signs and symptoms even though Adrenal Fatigue affects millions of people around the world, the medical industry still hasnt recognized it as an actual syndrome. Adrenal Fatigue is typically due to high and prolonged levels of stress. This could be stress at home, stress on the job, the stress in a relationship, and even stress from having a particular personality type. Any kind of stress directly affects the adrenal glands. Dont worry though, these guys were designed to help manage the hormones that go along with these moderate stress levels so a little stress here and there isnt bad. Its when its ongoing and unrelenting that it becomes a problem and starts giving people issues like back pain.

Your adrenal glands help balance your blood sugar and inflammation along with other important hormones. Like I said above, the adrenals are your first line of defense when stuff hits the fan. So you need them in tip-top shape to keep the body working at its peak.

Psychostimulants And Modafinil Dosing Considerations

The Best Adrenal Fatigue Diet Plan

Doses of dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate cited in classic pain literature tend to be low, up to 20 mg/day. In earlier psychiatric literature, doses trended higher, up to 40 mg/day and occasionally higher.41 The package insert for Adderall XR refers to treatment of adults with up to 60 mg/day. The maximum recommended dose for children is 30 mg/day. Similarly, the package insert for Ritalin LA does not recommend daily doses > 60 mg. The recommended starting dose of Adderall XR is 10 mg for children and 20 mg for adults. Ritalin LA can be started up to 20 mg for children and adults. For both drugs, dosage should be individualized according to the therapeutic needs and response of the patient. In the authors experience, doses above 80 mg/day are infrequent.

Amphetamine and methylphenidate psychostimulants are schedule II controlled drugs. Some states have special regulations. In Michigan, amphetamines may be prescribed only for ADHD, in which case the diagnosis must be written on the prescription blank. For all other indications including narcolepsy, augmentation of antidepressants, sedation and fatigue from opioids and other drugs, and as analgesic adjuvants, it is necessary to apply for a special amphetamine waiver.42

Modafinil is a schedule IV controlled drug. The recommended daily dose is 200 mg, although clinicians may start patients on 100 mg. The package insert refers to doses up to 400 mg. In the authors experience, doses above 400 mg/day are infrequent.

Youre Having Problems With Your Bowels Or Urination

If your back pain is paired with a loss of control over your bowels or urination, then its time to seek help immediately at a local emergency room. These symptoms point to cauda equina syndrome, where the nerves in the lower spine have become paralyzed. While rare, this syndrome can be permanently damaging to the nerves if left untreated. If you experience these symptoms, especially accompanied by numbness in the legs, then you may need surgery to decompress the nerves and preserve their overall function.

Symptoms that can indicate a more serious medical problem are:

These tips can help ease back pain when it happens. They can also help you prevent back pain in the first place.

Carry less

Heavy briefcases, laptop bags, suitcases, and purses can add unnecessary stress and strain to your neck and spine.

Try to reduce what you need to carry, and use bags that distribute the weight more evenly, such as a backpack. If you can, use a bag with wheels to keep weight off your back entirely.

Work your core

The muscles in and around your abdomen and back help keep you upright and carry you through your physical activities. Strengthening them can also reduce the chances of pain, strain, or damage to your back.

Plug strength training workouts with a core focus into your regular fitness routine a few times a week.

Improve your posture

Your mental health also has an effect on your risk of back pain. You may be at a higher risk of back pain if you have a stressful job or have depression and anxiety.

For The Avid Coffee Drinkers

Causes and management of fatigue with leg pain – Dr. Mohan M R

Did you know your body actually produces cortisol after drinking coffee? Its a natural response to the caffeine within the coffee. What tends to happen with coffee drinkers is they dont allow their body to release the natural rise and shine morning hormones. Instead, they reach for the cup of coffee looking for that artificial energy boost caffeine gives us. Over time, the adrenal glands get burned out and are not able to function the way they were designed to. This leads to us drinking more coffee to replace these natural hormones. Avid coffee drinkers also are not able to enter into the deeper levels of sleep where the most rebuilding and repairs take place. So not only are you not sleeping as well, but youre not able to wake up refreshed which again leaves you reaching for the coffee pot. Its a cycle that just keeps repeating itself. The only way to break it is to stop drinking it long enough for your Adrenal Glands to heal and only drink minimal amounts of coffee.

If your one to challenge this and say that an addiction to coffee has no effect on your body I challenge you to give up coffee cold turkey for 30 days and report back to me how your body feels. I promise it will feel a world of difference.

Lets be honest. The goal here is not to boycott coffee for the sake of our poor Adrenals. Its about moderation. There is a difference between being a social drinker of coffee and being completely addicted!

Extreme Fatigue And Pain

I currently have stenosis in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions of my back with a pinched nerve root at L2. I have had 4 surgeries at the lumbar level involving all disks. The last was last year. I understand disc degeneration but this seems fast.

For the past 20 years, I have had severe fatigue, weakness and chronic pain which seems to worsen daily. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia many years ago and have a positive ANA, rheumatoid factor and see rate of 47. There are lots of tiny lumps that can be felt in my arms and larger ones in my legs and stomach area. These hurt and cause bruising when palpitated. My children are exhibiting the same symptoms as I have at close to the same age of onset They complain of back pain as well. I have difficulty thinking often as if digging through a dense fog.

Is there any single illness that would exhibit these symptoms? Doctors run tests, determine nothing and say other symptoms are not in their area. I need help! Any suggestions are appreciated.

Causes Of Lower Back Ache And Fatigue

While lumbar back ache represents one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, lower back injuries have many different causes. Symptoms of back pain and fatigue, however, most often arise from systematic overuse of muscles. Unlike an acute muscle strain such as a lifting injury, chronic overuse that gradually becomes apparent may make diagnosis difficult. Patients need to discover the actions behind their injuries to get the self-care and medical treatment necessary to restore health.

Surgical interventions to correct spinal deformity include spinal fusion, which is a surgical procedure that uses bone graft to replace a disc. After undergoing surgery, your back will require physical therapy for three to six months. In addition to doctors and dentists, you can also see neurologists, physiatrists, and chiropractors. These specialists specialize in the brain and spinal cord disorders. They are often the best choice for patients seeking treatment for back pain.

Non-specific back pain is usually not diagnosed until the pain is long-term. There is no clear cause for non-specific back pain, but doctors should seek a diagnosis to treat the condition. It is important to visit a specialist for treatment in order to get the best treatment options. If the pain is chronic or has no specific cause, a doctor will perform diagnostic imaging to help identify the exact source of the pain. Further, they can perform MRIs to help diagnose underlying conditions.

While back pain is a common ailment, it can also be caused by something else. Many people experience sciatica or other pain in the leg, and a slipped disc could be the cause. Other types of back pain may be more acute, such as a herniated disc. For nonspecific back pain, a doctor may need to perform radiological imaging to diagnose the exact cause of the pain.

See A Psychiatrist Or Therapist

If symptoms of chronic fatigue sound similar to symptoms of depression thats because theres often a lot of crossover between the two. Experiencing fatigue can make you feel depressed and feeling depressed can promote feelings of fatigue, which creates a vicious cycle, Dr. Cohen says. Getting treated for depression and/or anxiety can make a big difference in how well you can cope with fatigue, she says. A psychiatrist, preferably one who specializes in chronic diseases, can help you get the right diagnosis and treatment for mental health issues, especially when medication is necessary.

Changes To Physical Activity

Another way of managing the fatigue from spinal stenosis is by changing your physical routine. While a lot of this can be managed with consistent physical therapy, small lifestyle changes and exercise can help with chronic fatigue.

However, its important to keep in mind the activities for people to deal with chronic fatigue should not be confused with the usual exercise that most people go through. This is because most of these exercises arent designed for the specific needs of spinal stenosis patients, and neither are they effective in addressing fatigue. It can also be ineffective with cases that involve surgery.

What your doctor will most likely recommend is a personalized course of Graded Exercise Therapy . These exercises progress from low-intensity activities to moderately paced ones with the goal of conditioning the body to establish a threshold where it can conduct physical activity efficiently and without overexerting your muscles.

These exercises can be performed with physical therapy, but theyre most often performed by patients at home. However, its still crucial that they be accompanied by someone who can keep track of their progress or help them when things go wrong, especially if theyre much older. None of these exercises are supposed to be physically demanding, but its best to have someone nearby for safety precautions.

Numb Leg From Alternate Sources

If leg numbness exists without lower back pain, then the diagnostic possibilities open up to include many other possible causations. Locating the exact source of symptoms can be a time consuming process to be sure. Numbness in the leg or legs can also occur due to many other potential causes, including any or all of the following conditions:

Cervical spinal stenosis or thoracic spinal stenosis can cause weakness and numbness in the legs, as well as the inability to stand or walk. We see obvious severe cervical stenosis as the cause of many leg symptoms, although in some patients, this cause is never even investigated, due to the existence of scapegoat lumbar issues which take the blame, while remaining completely innocent.

Numbness can come from pseudo-sciatica, including piriformis muscle-enacted compression of the sciatic nerve or compression of the nerve by a tumor or cyst.

Leg numbness can be caused by a disease process, a neuromuscular disorder or other systemic cause, although it is rare that numbness will be the exclusive symptom expressed.

Numbness might result from localized nerve tissue injury or disease in part of the leg.

Numbness can come about due to circulatory problems that might affect one or both legs and may be further complicated by specific factors that might relieve or exacerbate the symptomology, such as position of the legs or body.
